This research guide is intended as an overview of library resources and services of particular relevance for students in Gemma Mangione’s Fall 2016 course A&HG 4575, Master’s Seminar in Arts Administration.  The resources, primarily electronic and accessible on and off campus, have been selected as ones supporting the objectives of the program, i.e., “to allow students to begin the Master’s Thesis process in a structured environment, with the benefit of input from and discussion with faculty and other students” and “to help students develop academic and professional skills in critical writing, research, and analysis of problems in the field.”  This guide also includes a section describing research consultation and assistance services and options for document retrieval and delivery available to all members of the Teachers College community.

Ask a Librarian a Question – To explore a variety of kinds of research support:  submit an email reference query to librarians onsite; request a research consultation with a Gottesman librarian; review frequently asked questions via the library’s Knowledge Database.

E-Reserves – Provides online access to digital course readings, including e-journal articles and book chapters, as well as call numbers for physical course reserves materials (books, DVDs, videos, etc.).

Document Delivery – The means to recommend items for purchase and/or to request from other libraries materials  (dissertations, book chapters, journal articles, etc.) not available through the Gottesman or Columbia University Libraries.

Learning at the Library – The Gottesman Libraries’ blog via the Pressible platform, including content in many topical areas contributed by library staff members.

Online Databases

Academic Search Premier – A multidisciplinary database providing full text for more than 4,600 journals, including nearly 3,900 peer-reviewed titles.  PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals.  See also Academic Search Complete, a scholarly, multidisciplinary full-text database, with more than 8,500 full-text periodicals, including more than 7,300 peer-reviewed journals.  The database features PDF content going back as far as 1887.

Google Scholar – Provides the means to search for scholarly research across many disciplines and sources:   articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities, and other web sites.

ProQuest – Provides broad multidisciplinary coverage of scholarly  journals, newspapers, dissertations, and other types of publications; for international coverage and access to full texts of dissertations only, search Digital Dissertations, a subset of ProQuest.

JSTOR – An online archive of over 1,200 leading scholarly journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work.  Journals are always included from volume 1, issue 1 and include previous and related titles.  Tthe most recently published issues (the past 3-5 years) are generally not available through JSTOR, though they usually are through other e-sources.

LexisNexis Academic – An interdisciplinary, full-text database of over 18,000 sources including newspapers, journals, wire services, newsletters, company reports and SEC filings, case law, government documents, transcripts of broadcasts, and selected reference works.

Art Index Retrospective – Index to periodical literature in art  published from 1929 to 1984.

Art Source – “Developed from a merger of high-quality databases from EBSCO Publishing and H.W. ARTbibliographies Modern – Citations and abstracts for publications on modern and contemporary art (20th-21st centuries).

Bibliography of the History of Art – Citations and abstracts for articles in Western art history periodicals and other publications.

ERIC – Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to provide extensive access to educational-related periodical literature, ERIC (which stands for Educational Resources Information Center) provides coverage of conferences, meetings, government documents, theses, dissertations, reports, audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories, books, and monographs.  In addition to this version, made available via the ProQuest platform, ERIC is also accessible via the U.S. government ERIC site and through Ebsco ERIC.

Education Full Text – Provides comprehensive coverage of an international range of English-language periodicals, monographs, and yearbooks. Indexing coverage begins June 1983; abstracts are included beginning spring 1994; full text of some journals is available beginning in January 1996.

Education Index Retro – Provides cover-to-cover indexing for an international range of English-language periodicals and yearbooks; coverage from 1929 through mid-1983.

Education Research Complete – Provides indexing and abstracts for more than 2,100 journals, as well as full text for more than 1,200 journals, and includes full text for nearly 500 books and monographs.

Professional Development Collection – Designed for professional educators, this database provides a highly specialized collection of nearly 520 high-quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. The database also contains more than 200 educational reports.

ABI/INFORM Global – A subset of ProQuest, this database provides access to and the means to search “1800 premier worldwide business periodicals for information on advertising, marketing, economics, management techniques, human resources, finance, taxation, computers, and more. Includes the Wall Street Journal.”

Business Abstracts with Full Text – Provides indexing and abstracting of articles from over 800 English-language business magazines and trade and research journals, plus the full text of selected periodicals.

Business Source Complete – Provides full text for over 10,000 scholarly business journals and other sources, including more than 1,150 peer-reviewed business publications, and more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922.   Coverage includes educational administration, management, and leadership and related topics.

Emerald Management Xtra 150 – Contains articles from over 175 management journals, complete with full text archives back to 1994 and abstracts back to 1989. Covers the major management disciplines,  including strategy, leadership, library and information management, marketing, and human resource management.

Cultural Policy

Cultural Policy and the Arts National Data Archive (CPANDA) – “The world’s first interactive digital archive of policy-relevant data on the arts and cultural policy in the United States . . . founded in 2001. It was a collaborative effort of Princeton University’s Firestone Library and the Princeton Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies.”

PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) – Contains citations to journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, “gray literature,” research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, and Internet resources pertaining to public affairs and public policy issues.

Development

The Foundation Directory – Provides descriptions of grant makers, including private grant-making foundations, community foundations, operating foundations, and corporate grant makers.  The Power Search component searches nine databases simultaneously focusing on grantmakers, companies, grants, 990s, news, jobs, RFPs, PubHub reports, and nonprofit literature.

Grantmakers in the Arts – “Grantmakers in the Arts is the only national association of both public and private arts and culture funders in the US, including independent and family foundations, public agencies, community foundations, corporate philanthropies, nonprofit regrantors, and national service organizations – funders of all shapes and sizes across the US and into Canada.”

Humanities and Social Science Research

Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) – Multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. Indexes world’s leading arts and humanities journals with selected, relevant items from major science and social science journals.

Arts and Humanities Database – “Titles include both scholarly peer-reviewed journals and selected trade and consumer titles relevant to applied arts and cultural studies”; subject strengths include art, design, crafts and photography; archaeology, anthropology and classical studies; architecture, interior design and urban planning; history, philosophy, geography and religion; modern languages and literatures; and music, theatre, film and cultural studies.

BHI:  British Humanities Index – indexes over 320 international humanities journals and weekly magazines published in the UK and other English speaking countries, as well as quality newspapers published in the UK. Topics include architecture, archaeology, art, antiques, education, economics, foreign affairs, environment, cinema, current affairs, gender studies, history, language, law, linguistics, literature, music, painting, philosophy, poetry, political science, religion, and theatre.

Humanities and Social Sciences Index Retrospective – Provides coverage of journal articles in the humanities and social sciences from 1907 through 1984.

Humanities Full Text – Abstracts, bibliographic indexing, and full text from scholarly sources and specialized magazines in the humanities. Indexing begins in 1984, full-text coverage in 1995.

Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) – “Multidisciplinary database with searchable author abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences.”

Social Sciences Full Text – Provides coverage of English-language journals across social science disciplines, with indexing from 1983, abstracting from 1984, and select access to full text from 1984 to the present.

SocINDEX with Full Text – Offers comprehensive coverage of sociology, encompassing all sub-disciplines and closely related areas of study.  The database contains full text for more than 860 journals dating back to 1908, more than 830 books and monographs, and over 16,800 conference papers.

Sociological Abstracts – Abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences, covering such major areas as culture and social structure, family and social welfare, history and theory of sociology, radical sociology, rural and urban sociology, and the sociology of the arts, business, and education.

HeinOnline – “Contains the full text of numerous legal journals, Code of Federal Regulations, Federal Register, Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents, Foreign Relations of the U.S., Presidential Executive Orders, Congressional Record, U.S. Statutes at Large, and other documents from the executive, congressional and judicial branches of the U.S. government.”

Index to Legal Periodicals and Books – Covers the contents of over 1,025 international legal periodicals and law books,  providing coverage of scholarly articles, symposia, jurisdictional surveys, court decisions, legislation, books, book reviews, and more.

Index to Legal Periodicals Retrospective – Indexes the contents of over 750 legal periodicals published in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand published between 1908 and 1981.

Westlaw Campus Research (accessible on campus only) – Contents include cases from the courts of all 50 states and the Federal courts; statutes from all 50 states and Federal statutes published in the United States Code Annotated; Federal regulations published in the Federal Register and the Code of Federal Regulations; American Law Reports, a publication containing attorney-written articles that summarize and analyze case law on a particular legal issue; and American Jurisprudence 2d, a comprehensive encyclopedia of state and federal law.

Alexander Street Press Databases – Themed collections of print documents, video, and recorded sound across disciplines; notable databases include Alexander Street Literature (cross-searchable collections covering the literatures of place, race, and gender), American Film Scripts Online (a searchable full-text database of screenplays and shooting scripts), Dance in Video (streaming video files of dance productions and documentaries by influential performers and companies of the 20th century),  Opera in Video (streaming video database containing important opera performances), Theatre in Video (containing performances of the world’s leading plays and film documentaries in streaming video), and many others.

International Index to Music Periodicals – Music journal resource with almost 800,000 indexed articles, plus detailed abstracts and full text from 1874 to the present, covering the scholarly to the popular.

International Index to Performing Arts – Draws its content from more than 210 international periodicals and also indexes articles and obituaries appearing in the New York Times and the Washington Post.

Music Index – A comprehensive guide to music periodicals and literature featuring digitized content from 1970 to present.

Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance – provides information about theater and performance from ancient Greece to current developments around the globe. Areas covered include performances in playhouses, dance, opera, radio, film, television, and popular performances.

Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online – Comprehensive online resource devoted to music research of all the world’s peoples; includes entries by more than 700 expert contributors from all over the world comprising  1,210 essays and images from 10 sources and hundreds of audio examples.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature – A comprehensive music bibliography featuring citations, abstracts, and indexes. There are currently over 540,000 records in RILM on traditional music, popular music, and classical music, representing disciplines that include musicology, ethnomusicology, pedagogy, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and others.

RIPM:  Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals – an international annotated database with detailed content analysis of writings on musical history and culture between 1800 and 1950 provided by internationally-recognized scholars and editors.  RIPM currently indexes the contents of 120 music periodicals including articles, reviews, illustrations, music examples, advertisements, press reviews, and more.

Visual Arts

Arcade – “Arcade unites the collections of the Frick Art Reference Library and the libraries of the Brooklyn Museum and The Museum of Modern Art, three of the founding members of NYARC (also known as NYARC-3). Containing more than 727,000 bibliographic records, Arcade provides access to research collections spanning the spectrum of art history, from ancient Egypt to contemporary art. These resources, many uniquely held, include exhibition and art collection catalogs, monographs and periodicals, rare books, photograph collections, artists’ books, files on artists, auction catalogs, archives (textual and visual), digital resources and specialized databases. Arcade was launched in January 2009.”
