American Horror Story: Coven ended last night. Many fans were left unsatisfied with its conclusion. Others just had minor issues with it. A big problem for many was the attempt to balance horror and comedy. They felt it didn’t work. We, on the other hand, believe it did work, but there were still major issues with American Horror Story: Coven.

The series’ conclusion had some great moments, like the final scene between Fiona and Cordelia. Overall though, the finale had some major inconsistencies. Those problems really hurt the overall story arc. We love American Horror Story, so we offer these suggestions to help improve it for next season.

The biggest problem with this season of American Horror Story: Coven was that it felt unplanned. It seemed like Ryan Murphy and team were going from episode-t- episode without major goals in mind. The biggest example of this was the reveal of the supreme and Madison’s death.

From what we know about Madison, her powers should have helped her avoid death. She did it in the past, especially with the unveiling of her new abilities. There was no logical reason why Kyle succeed in killing her. The only reason this made sense was for the theatrical appeal of it. However, if Coven wanted fans to believe this death, there should have been a reveal about Kyle’s strength. Maybe his physical strength is so powerful it makes magic abilities useless. Anything that made this scene work in the frame of the story.

We kind of figured Cordelia was the supreme, but there weren’t too many clues addressing that possibility. It seemed like Murphy figured it out at the last minute, and then tried to fit it into the story in an illogical way.  From a story perspective, Zoe should be the supreme. All the clues were there for this to be true.  The signs were slightly there for Cordelia too but we never saw any of her real powers until the end. If she had these all along, shouldn’t they have surfaced in previous episodes? Like with the other girls? We’re not too bothered by this conclusion but it really didn’t fit with the consistency of the story.

American Horror Story: Asylum felt like the most thought out of the seasons thus far. So for next season, we hope Murphy channels the strength of that one while developing the new storylines. Murphy has such a talented cast and crew, we hope he uses them better in the upcoming series.
