How To Grow Indoor Marijuana: Step By Step

Step 1: Acquire seeds.

The most effective approach to do this is to get a few from high-quality weed you've had or a friend who grows. You know you'll be receiving high-quality bud since you already liked it. And best of all they will be free. Your next substitute is the web. You will discover literally 1000's of seed sellers on the web, and a few just want to scam you. Be very cautious and do your homework. Read some message boards and forums and look for the general consensus on which banks and breeders are best. When growing indoors it is essential to understand your strains of weed also. Several plants have been breed for and do best in only indoor or only outdoor. Several strains, such as pure sativas, might not be ideal for your indoor grow room due to the fact they stretch so much and take a long time to finish. Indicas grow much more squat and tend to finish quickly.

Step 2: Growing Factors

Do you have the time to take care of your marijuana plants? If you are going to learn how to grow weed indoors step by step you will want to devote some time. You will have to have about an hour every other day, even more when it comes to setting up and harvesting.

Step 3: Germination

After you have some seeds along with a grow room you are prepared to germinate (sprout) them. This can take anywhere from 12 hours to a week for the seed to open up and develop its' taproot. The best way to do this is the paper towel approach. All you need is a few wet paper towels and either a plastic bag or tupperware. You set your marijuana seeds between the wet paper towels and within the plastic bag. It is very important you keep these warm, it is one of the key elements in learning how to grow weed indoors step by step. I've had good results germinating on top of the cable tv box, which remains pretty warm, but a seedling starter mat is ideal. After the tap root pops out a quarter to a half an inch you want to plant it tap root down into your grow medium- ordinarily seedling starter mix or rockwool. It is crucial you start this seedling in something with little to no nutrients or fertilizers. After the first leaves are showing you want them under a low power light (fluorescents work great) as close as possible without touching. Have a fan blowing on them as well, on low power. It will stop unnecessary stretch and make them grow tough and strong from day 1.

Step 4: Vegetation

Now your marijuana plant has a couple of sets of leaves. In vegetative growth you can leave your lights on 24 hours a day, or use a timer and run your lights for 18 hours on and 6 hours off. Marijuana follows a photoperiod, and to keep your plant in vegetative growth you need at least 18 hours of light a day. At this point the plant starts to want more light and fertilizer. A 250 or 400 watt metal halide works best for vegetative growth. This guide on how to grow weed indoors step by step will outline your procedure, but you should do more research. With high intensity lights, such as MH and HPS, you need to be careful of burning your plants. With a 400 watt light and good air movement you can have your plants safe at about a foot away from the light. Having your lights on chains is very helpful for easily adjusting the height. Your plants are going to want food and nutrients as soon as they're out of the seedling stage. You need to determine what kind of nutrients you want to use. There are as many different fertilizer brands as there are strains of marijuana. I usually choose to grow organically, as the buds taste and smoke best. Some good organic nutrients come from Fox Farms, Earth Juice, Canna, Bonticare, Humboldt, and Advanced Nutrients. You should check each advised dose and start feeding your young plant at a quarter strength and gradually move up. Keep in mind there are different nutrients for vegetative growth and flowering because the plant wants different ratios of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) during its' life cycle. When your plants become root bound they will need to be repotted to something larger. I usually start with a 16oz cup for the first couple weeks (seedling), repot to a 1-2 gallon container (vegetative growth) and then before flowering I repot in a 5 gallon bucket.

Step 5: Flowering

If you veg your plants long enough they will show their sex naturally at around 5 or 6 weeks. Some people will only veg for a couple weeks (size becomes an issue indoors) and then switch their lights to 12 hours dark and 12 hours light, which triggers the plant to start budding or flowering. It is crucial to keep the light cycle times constant and the dark cycle completely dark. Once in 12/12 it can take about a week or two for your plants to show sex. Females will put out calyxes at internodes, or white pistols/hairs. Males develop pollen sacs that look like a cluster of balls. Finding and removing males is imperative when learning how to grow weed indoors step by step. If the males are left in your grow room and they pollinate your females, you will have crappy cannabis that is low in thc and full of seeds. When there is an absence of males, females produce an abundance of thc, resin, and fat colas (sinsemilla). Depending on the strain of marijuana you selected, flowering can take 6 to 16 weeks. During the early and middle stages of flowering your plant will need plenty of nutrients so make sure you have some quality bloom specific products, and remember to start weak so you don't burn them. Gradually, over the course of flowering, the buds thicken and the white hairs age to orange or red as the marijuana matures. Know your breeders recommended flowering time for the strain you selected and be sure to harvest at the proper time, when almost all hairs are red and the trichomes (thc crystals covering buds and leaves) are about half cloudy and amber. In your marijuana plants last week or growth you should flush its' growing medium with lots of straight water. The rule of thumb I use is put 5 times as much water through as the volume of the plants container, 3 times in the last 7 to 10 days. This ensures your plant uses up the remaining nutrients in it's leaves and soil, and will provide you with healthy, clean tasting marijuana.

Step 6: The Harvest and Cure

After a good flush you are ready to cut down your marijuana plants. If they aren't too big I cut and hang the whole plant, if they are rather large I will section them. Some people like to trim the leaves while they are fresh, some like to wait a week until they are rather dry, its really just preference. What is important is keeping fans on your drying crop to discourage any mold growth. After about a week they are dry enough to remove the buds from the stalks. Now begins the curing process, which can be done in any airtight container or bag. Your goal here is to wick the moisture from the inside of the bud out. At first you do not want to leave your fresh weed in the closed container for more than a few hours or over night. Then want to leave the weed in a paper bag or shoebox for more drying, and then return the buds to your jar over night and repeat for a couple weeks. Now you are ready to enjoy your hard work!
