I first saw a shipping container adapted into a living space was when someone had converted one in an attempt to build a fortress for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Because their priorities were clearly in order.

HAYDEN SPURDLE / IQ CONTAINERS

Brenda Kelly is behind the shipping container homes from IQ Container Homes based in New Zealand. The company’s website quotes Kelly as having loved tiny spaces and innovative design for those spaces since she was a child. Now, Kelly designs container homes and even lives in one that also doubles as a display model for the company. The example below is a 20-foot (6 metres) container and only uses 107 square feet (10 square metres) of that space for living space.

In a YouTube tour of the home, Kelly highlights the high ceilings and white walls, which are used to ensure the space does not feel too closed in. Tall cabinets are used in the kitchen to provide extra storage space, coupled with a small fridge under the counter.

Oddly, Kelly has placed the living room above the bedroom space, allowing her to make the most out of the fantastic view outside her window. The sofa pulls out into a double bed, and there are extra storage spaces underneath it.

The bathroom has a clear roof to provide gorgeous lighting, as well as allowing the natural heat from the sun to warm the room. Despite the small space of the container, Kelly has a large shower and doesn’t cramp up the bathroom space.

The bedroom is below the living room, and the ceiling is 3 feet high (1 metre) – providing enough room to sit up in bed without hitting your head on the ceiling. The wardrobe is at the foot of the bed and there is additional wardrobe space on either side of the clothes rod.

By using colour, lighting and clever storage options, Kelly has created a warm and inviting atmosphere in her small home. Her ingenuity and thinking outside of the box helped her to make a beautiful home inside a box.

If I ever want to live in a modern version of a Hobbit-Hole, I definitely know who to call for help!
