For the first time in all of my 36 years I am a bridesmaid!
I wasn’t at all excited. It just seemed like a very dreadful task and as much as I love my favorite cousin, she’s just as indecisive as I am so this process was beginning to be overloaded with texts and emails about what her big day should look like.
And then we went dress shopping! I’ll admit that got me a little pumped thinking about how gorgeous we’d all look in our dresses on her wedding day.

What I thought would be a long morning turned out to be an hour visit at Baltimore’s chicest bridal boutique, Betsey Robinson Bridal. Afterwards we all went to brunch and had a surprise cupcake tasting via the bride-to-be. It was over perfectly cooked bacon and fresh squeezed orange juice that I realized I had to change how I thought about this. So here’s my bridesmaids do’s and don’ts!
Here’s what I will do:
1. Get the deets and stay on top of them. Even though she may have a own calendar of events, I need one too. Living in New York makes things a little difficult at times, but as a bridesmaid you promise to be there for the woman of the hour. That means remembering all the fitting dates, planning the bridal showers, and of course providing the ratchet fun that will happen at the bachelorette party.
2. Give my honest opinion (even when I honestly don’t have an opinion). Sometimes we just need to be validated. But when it’s your wedding, I stand by my decision in that the bride should ultimately make her own decisions. I can co-sign your decisions, but I will not make the decision for you!
3. Throw great parties in her honor. Since my clubbing days, I gave up partying. So I’m all the way pumped about this bachelorette party filled with VIP status moments like dancing on tables and creating hours of fun that I hope to not remember.
Here’s what I won’t do:
1. COMPLAIN. The last thing the bride-to-be needs to worry about is pleasing her bridesmaids. So instead of saying what I can’t do or won’t do, I’ll just smile politely and suck it up. It’s just a few hours of my life and if that means bedazzling my heels or stuffing party favors in the wee hours of the morning the night before… then oh well!
