The 4th Annual Winter Wonderland Festival of Lights and two Carnival Weekends

13 August 2014

Dear All

The 4th Annual Winter Wonderland Festival of Lights and two Carnival Weekends are behind us now. Quite a challenge with the first one raining out. The community, service providers and City of Cape Town stood behind the committee and all supported our ‘Take2’ without the blink of an eye. Within a week, the marketing team and committee worked round the clock to make the second weekend a reality. This enabled the stall holders, musicians and businesses to have a longer trading and for the visitors who were very disappointed that they could not attend the first one. This also enabled the Carnival Parade that everyone was looking forward to – participants and visitors – to take place. Just to see the absolute joy in the eyes and faces of the children taking part – priceless!

Firstly, we want to thank God for allowing us to see the opportunity and for giving us the talents and the team (some team members who live in Somerset West) to execute this.

Last year I mentioned that one of the aims was to extend the amount of visitors to Gorgeous Bay over a longer period of time. This became a reality this year as visitors already started streaming in the weekend before the Carnival Weekend was to take place and over the whole of the school holidays – resulting in about 20 000 visitors to Gordon’s Bay over the holiday period.

Thank you to all businesses and home owners who put lights up on their buildings. It is amazing to see how it grows if you just add one string extra per year. We are hearing via the grapevine that residents are motivating their neighbours (especially those visible from Beach Road) to put up lights next year.

We will try to include as many people as possible in this letter, but because Winter Wonderland has grown and with the support of people taking over the responsibility of many departments, we do not have all the names and for this we apologize. This letter also serves for you to see what part each played in the bigger picture and how important each individual’s role is in the success of Winter Wonderland.

This is truly an event by Gordon’s Bay for Gordon’s Bay.

PLANNING OF THE EVENT:

First and foremost our dedicated committee. We had wonderful brainstorming sessions and open conversations – feeling free to share ideas. Not everything materialized as was planned an envisaged, but in many areas a start was made. This is important as it will grow in the future and already more “champions” are and will be coming on board. Sponsoring the venues for our meetings: Windrose Guest House, Talla’s Tavern (handing out of prizes for the raffle winners and catering wine and pizzas) & Melt’s Tavern provided venue for debrief meeting as well as delicious snacks.

City of Cape Town: The contribution and support of the City was invaluable and one of the major factors enabling Winter Wonderland to take place – everyone involved in cleaning the village, erecting motifs, upgrade of beach front, etc. Special Events Committee: Madam Mayor Patricia De Lille, Councillor Brett Herron, Councillor Gareth Bloor, Alderman Jean-Pierre Smith & Teral Cullen A special thank you to the support of Leonora de Souza-Zilwa (Events Manager) and Mariana Opperman, Julian Fredericks and the drive of Sandra-Ann Williams. Cllr Johan Middleton who was always available (day or night), Cllr Stuart Pringle and Cllr Dave Venter. Electricity Department: Ian Rose, Clinton Hartogh. Clinton Hartogh’s team who just deliver! Our local guys Donald Pretorius whom we called a few times after hours and who was always willing to send his team out to help. Ian Pollock for connecting the fun park & Circus and disconnecting and collecting the cables after event finished. Andrew McDonald for making decisions to get quick action. Renee Olivier & Ruschenca Fourie – Parks & Recreation

Nico de Kock & Wesley Schuller – Traffic (excellent support and these guys know to go about making an event a success) Gordon’s Bay SAPS – Lt Nkonyana and her team Law Enforcement – Rachel Paulsen and her team Metro Police – Marco Appany and his team Neighborhood Watch – for doing extra patrols at the beach front Arno Terblanche – helping with smooth running of applications for certificates Eduard Labuschagne, Ulrich Louis & Nicolaas Benade – Fire & Resue Noise permission signatures – Adam de Carvelho Johan van der Westhuizen – Disaster Management When we were unable to get hold of the new owner of our previous site, Franklin Anthony from Parks without hesitation offered us our new venue at Hendon Park which has amazing potential. To Willem le Roux who set the ball rolling until Gideon du Plessis took over who we worked very closely with. A pro-active person, excellent communication and a doer. Inititiating the fixing of the beachfront balustrades and repairing the little wooden bridge himself one Sunday. Gerhard Conradie of GLC Development for their generous contribution of the Van Riebeeck Site and without hesitation allowed extention. Chris Barratt for the Ghost House and Craft Market Venues. Hanli Steenkamp for sharing her home.

Site Managers: Pieter and Morné van Antwerpen for their invaluable contribution. Sponsored by BP to work on the sites (these guys worked hard and long hours – always with energy and a smile) Johnny, Hano, Justin and Mark as well as Fundiswa and Mary who kept the toilets clean over the two weekends.

Marquees: Dowings Marquee Hire (Adelle – who helped beyond what was expected of her, supported and gave advice regarding applications and for your patience), Elite Marquees – Byron who phoned and offered marquees at no cost when the weather turned bad. Downings Bedouin – who put up Bedouins at reduced cost.

Waste Bins: Sappi and Mpack who sponsored bins. Waste Plan – Reinhardt Bieler for superb service.

Boland Toilets for excellent service.

University of Potchefstroom: Prof Elmarie Slabbert and her team: Viability Study of Winter Wonderland.

Amanda van Wyk – updating banners for Boat trips, WonderNote and GB Then & Now Tone van Tonder – drawing of maps for events application

Security: Guy van Damme and Dave Surridge form Somerset West who took on this portfolio. Gordon’s Bay Security, GB Med, Neighbourhood Watch and AM Security for providing guards at the various venues – all who did an excellent job. This was a major sponsorship and extremely important aspect. Although the agreement did not include the second weekend, they were all on their posts without any hesitation. A great THANK YOU!

Liquor Stalls: Run by Carl Gultig and his team which took a big load off André’s shoulders Liquor Licence: DH Bestuursdienste who renewed the licence for “Take 2” at no charge.

LIGHTS:

Phil Shawcross who reacted on a facebook message asking for help and helped André and Dirk Kirton to re-rope all the motifs and Winter Wonderland Display. This took up a few day’s (and night’s) work. Almost 1km of rope light was used (500m sponsored by ACDC) and 5000 cable ties sponsored by Cronlec. Thank you to Lourens Snyman and Shélanca from CRONLEC who helped to sponsor 200m of electrical cable and many other necessities required for the lighting. Jeanette Loring who sponsored Mike to come and help out one Saturday. Alan Schnider from Specialized Components who generously provided his workshop for us to do all the work and transported the motifs to Gordon’s Bay for the City to put up and back to storage again. Dirk Kirton of Good News Electrical who did all the connections of the motifs and the Fairy Forest and Market trees and helped out where needed – most of the time after hours and over weekends. Lester Burrow for the connection of the lights of the Post Office Tree. John Adams & after he retired, Imraan Karaan – Post Office for connections for lights and Telkom for connection. Anton from BP who loaned us his extention lead.

Arrister for making the Carnival Park sign at very short notice and sponsoring it. Also transported fire drums and fencing and for storage of these till next year.

Putting the fairy lights up on the trees: André Paulsen, Phil Shawcross, Pieter van Antwerpen, from BP Justin & Mark. Keeping the lights burning – Pieter and André. Putting up of the motifs on the lamp poles and Winter Wonderland display – Clinton Hartogh’s team from City of Cape Town. Returning to do repairs when the water (what a bugger!) seeped into the ropes.

WINTER WONDERLAND NEEDS UNDER COVER STORAGE SPACE to store the motifs till next year. CAN ANYONE HELP? We found a storage facility but will cost R9000 for the year. At the moment is temporarily stored by Johan Hatting.

Gordon’s Bay and surroundings is surely beginning to get the recognition it deserves. We are not the “forgotten” or “best kept secret” village anymore. I am sure that the residents and businesses will do their utmost best to keep and improve the village ambience and atmosphere. We are now attracting more visitors throughout the year. This improves the vibe and atmosphere and also help the businesses in the village to do much better.

It is still, however, up to each individual to do their part in marketing the friendliest village, working together, supporting each other and be part of the Gorgeous Bay Team.

ALL the people mentioned above unselfishly contributed their share to Winter Wonderland – whether it is in time, contributions or finances – all are important.

And for that we salute YOU!

Best Wishes

André Paulsen
