State Rep. Al Pscholka today met Damarien Bell, who penned the winning entry in the 7-8 age group in the “Turning Pages with Pscholka” summer reading contest. The lawmaker also recently spent time with Reunica Mays, the winner of the 12-and-up age category.

Over the summer, Pscholka teamed up with the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor and the Project Learn Literacy program to facilitate the contest, and nearly 40 participants took part in the competition. The contest encouraged participants to improve their reading levels by choosing fiction and non-fiction literature with a Michigan theme. They were asked to connect their work to the idea, “What does Michigan mean to you?” and create a report, poem, piece of artwork or multimedia presentation demonstrating how their chosen book relates to it.

Mays, who attends the Benton Harbor Charter School Academy, claimed the top spot in her age group with her essay, “The Four Magnificent Seasons.” Bell, who attends the STEAM Academy at MLK, won his age group with his entry titled “Detroit Lions – Joique Bell.”

“It was an honor to spend time with both Damarien and Reunica and congratulate them on their accomplishments,” said Pscholka, R-Stevensville. “Each of their essays showcased our state in a new and unique way and demonstrated what they learned over the course of the ‘Turning Pages’ contest. It’s exciting to see how each of the Boys & Girls Club members enhanced their reading skills while exploring all that Michigan has to offer.”

Pscholka visited both of the participants’ schools and had lunch with them and their favorite teachers and principals.

Winners from three different age groups were selected by Pscholka, and all participants from the competition received an honorary tribute signed by Pscholka and Gov. Rick Snyder.
