Rep. Gary Glenn, R-Midland, was invited to meet Jan. 30 at Saginaw Valley State University with area youth chosen by their high school principals to participate in the Great Lakes Regional Youth Leadership Institute, an academic year-long community outreach program facilitated by SVSU’s Office of Diversity Programs. Glenn was asked to mentor students on the personal characteristics, work ethic, and discipline needed to succeed in running for and serving in public office. The institute provides leadership and diversity development for 96 high school students who are paired with SVSU student mentors and corporate and community volunteers to participate in training sessions led by nationally-trained facilitators and presenters. Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, The Salvation Army, Bridge for Racial Harmony, United Way, and 31 public high schools in the Tri-Cities area participate as volunteers and sponsors of the institute, along with elected and governmental officials who are also part of the support group. The program is led by Dr. Mamie T. Thorns, special assistant to the president of SVSU for diversity programs.
