For hundreds of thousands of small businesses, the web has created the chance to reach potential customers who might not normally walk through their door. By connecting small businesses with potential suppliers and customers all over the country and the world, it has removed the tyranny of distance, and allowed entrepreneurial business people to start up their operations in cities and small towns and everywhere in between.

For the second year in Australia, we’re recognising and celebrating those towns and regions whose small businesses are making the most of online tools like websites, social media, and online marketing to expand and grow. We call them ‘eTowns’, and whether it’s an art gallery in Darwin, a healthcare business on the Sunshine Coast or a surf, kite, and snowboarding store in Port Phillip, they all know that online, there are no boundaries of geography or size.

Our winning Aussie eTowns for 2013 are:

Cockburn, WA

Darwin, NT

Holdfast Bay, SA

Launceston, Tas

North Sydney, NSW

Port Phillip, Vic

South Canberra, ACT

Sunshine Coast, Qld

The strong performance of these towns and regions is great news for Australia’s economy. Research by Deloitte Access Economics has found that small businesses with a high digital engagement are twice as likely to be growing revenue, and each twice as much revenue per employee. They are also four times as likely to be hiring.

Congratulations to our eTown winners and we look forward to revealing the national winner shortly.
