I mean, dogs are always a man’s best friend and they are a great companion to have. But do you know which are the top 10 breeds that are popular in Singapore? Here’s the lowdown according to asiaone.com
#10. Pomeranian
They are also known as ‘Pom Pom’ and has always been a popular choice for a family pet for a long time. They are petite and cute but do not let their looks fool you: they may be small but some of them are relatively fierce. They make an excellent guard dog since they are often suspicious of strangers and bark often (but then, so small…). The shed a lot so for those who are not so keen in cleaning up often, this breed isn’t the ideal dog for the family. Pomeranians are one of the HDB approved dogs.
#9. Labrador Retriever
This is a rather large breed of dog and has been favourites not just in Singapore but all over the world, especially in the US and Canada. Labradors loves to eat and obesity would become a problem if the owner doesn’t pay attention to their diet and exercise. They are intelligent, energetic and good natured hence making them a great companion for families with children. The shed a lot as well, even more than Pomeranians so you have been warned if you can’t deal with shedding. A Labrador Retriever is not an HDB approved dog as they are too big to be kept in a small HDB flat.
You might see labradors in army camps, police camps and in the Customs as they’re one of the breeds protecting our countries. If you’re interested, retired labradors are often up for adoption when these guardian angels have “ORDed”!
#8. Poodle
Poodles are affectionate and smart, which makes them one of the best companions if you are someone who loves to cuddle. They look adorable and can be lost in a pile of soft toys as they themselves resemble one (how cute!).
However, to maintain a poodle, there is a lot of grooming to be done regularly. They are a good companion for babies and kids as well so that they won’t be easily bored in the house. If the poodle is not properly trained, a board poodle is a destructive poodle. This an HDB approved dog as it’s so small, but and shedding is minimal as compared to the other 2 dogs, but you’ll spend a ton on grooming it.
#7. Chihuahua
They are the world’s smallest dogs and have a really long live – up to 18 years. They too are extremely suspicious to strangers like the Pomeranian and hence would make a great watch dogs (I know, unbelievable, right?). They are also approved by the HDB for residents to keep them as pets. They don’t shed much as well so a bonus if you’re looking for a companion!
#6. Golden Retriever
This breed is another all-time favourite breed of dogs. Their friendly and tolerant attitude makes them a great family pets. However, you can probably guess the amount of shedding a golden retriever sheds are extremely high as they have a lot of fur. Like the Labrador Retriever, obesity will be an issue if the owner doesn’t take care of its diet and exercise as they too love to eat.
This is not an HDB approved pet for residents due to its size, and is relatively more popular than labradors in Singapore. Oh, when they are puppies they are just so undeniable cute. And even when they are older, you’d still want to cuddle them to sleep especially in cold weathers.
#5. Miniature Schnauzer
This breed of dogs is often described as intelligent and fun loving dogs. Teaching them tricks is also a breeze as they are extremely intelligent. They are also known to be very articulate and often bark at random objects. They are approved by HDB and don’t shed a lot either despite the amount of fur they have.
#4. The Maltese
Maltese are gentle, fearless and they greet everyone as a friend. Their glamorous while coat gives them a look of nobility. They love to be around people and are extremely adaptable to apartment living. Needless to say, with their small size they are approved by HDB as well. Despite the amount of fur, they seem to have, they don’t normally shed too much.
#3. Jack Russel Terrier
With their small size and playful nature, Jack Russel Terriers have been a favourite breed for families for a long period of time. Due to their playful nature, they would provide a tonne of exercise for the family. However, if your apartment is extremely small, this breed does not do well in small spaces so you may want to reconsider your choices.
They are well behaved if they are trained from a young age. Failure to train a do properly might result in them destroying everything in the house which is below your knee level. This breed is also approved by HDB, but as mentioned earlier, they prefer larger spaces to run around!
#2. The Mixed Breeds (Mongrels)
You’ll see them anywhere: from your void deck to the coffeeshop, roaming around and minding its own business. Mongrels are mixed-breed dogs or mutt which are a result of international breeding.
From living in the dumpsters to finding a home in Singaporeans’ homes, it’s heartwarming to know that these dogs are being loved just as much if not more by locals. Usually rescued by animal shelters, mongrels tend to grow rather big and hence they are not approved by HDB.
#1. Shih Tzu
Not unexpected, isn’t it? A Shih Tzu is just so adorable. The name “Shih Tzu” literally means “Lion Dog”. They are thought to originated from ancient China and people think that they are probably one of the oldest breeds of dogs.
They may look fierce but there is nothing fierce about this dog: a Shih Tzu is an affectionate, happy and outgoing housedog who loves nothing more than to follow his owners from room to room. They are approved by HDB so you can adopt one and have it follow you around the house. How adorable!
