It’s a new semester and we all attend the first day in new clothes, new bag, new stationeries, new shoes and new mobile phones (sometimes). What do students look forward to in a new semester? Besides the classes, students look forward to meeting their friends, sharing their vacation experiences, updating on what is going on with their life, share information on latest gadgets, new movies and what not. Apart from these, there are 5 things that most university students do at the dawn of a new semester. You would have seen some of your friends do them, so read to find out!

1. Look up for free times, movie times and break times

Let’s face it. Not all lecturers conduct active two way lectures. Whilst some excel in providing knowledge, some conduct monotonous reading sessions in the name of lecture. Though this does not involve physical activity, it does cause mental exhaustion to a great extent. This results in students looking forward to free periods between classes and long break hours whereby you can hit the Cineplex, eat out or play bowling perhaps. Besides, you get to spend quality time with your peers.

2. Stock up on sweeeeeeeeeeets!
M&M, Skittles, Mentos, Fruit plus, Tick Tacks, these are all boons in a university student’s life! The latest addition here is lollypops. When your eyelids droop without your consent, when the lecturer’s voice sounds like a lullaby and when you are stuck sitting in the first row, right under the watchful eyes of the tutor himself, you are left with no other option, but to secretly pop a sweet into your mouth and survive those agonizing hours. Apart from giving you an instant dose of glucose, chewing sweets will move your facial muscles, thus temporarily distracting you from falling asleep in class.

3. Plan nap times
University life is probably the only phase after infancy which allows you to enjoy sleep like no other. Assignments, exams and research are exceptions though.  Surviving university and its tantrums is no joke, therefore you need sufficient sleep to endure rest of the week. Some days require extensive work and drain the whole lot of energy in you, causing you to knock out as soon as you are done with whatever that needs to be done. The biggest joys in a student’s life are to start class late on a Monday and end early on a Friday. However, class-less Mondays and Fridays are the best! Not forgetting that this happens once in every leap year. Yes it is that rare.

4. Download games, photo editing apps and e-book
The 21st century brings the whole wide world to you in a palm sized device. It helps immensely to kill those waiting hours to pay fees, to meet higher authorities and to get your forms sorted. Instead of staring at people and walls, students play games and read books on their mobile phones. PhotoGrid, Camera 360, Wattpad, Temple Run, Candy Crush, Subway Surf and Fruit Ninja are a few to be named. Time flies by once you start editing a picture or start forming a collage. Well it is not an ideal time pass activity, but this generation is such that you can’t help but to think that doing something is better than nothing.

5. New semester resolution
Sounds easy? Yes, it is absolutely easy to write down what all you intend to change/improve in the upcoming semester, but carrying them out? Ermmm if I’ve already done those in the previous semester, why am I writing it now? Bingo! Similar to the New Year Resolution, new semester resolution will be written down every semester without fail, carried out for a few days and then forgotten for many many days. Changing for the better requires a lot of consistent effort. Jotting down resolutions is a great start to something new, but it is equally important to walk the talk.

University life has lots to offer for its students. It is the time to try on new things, make new friends, experience adulthood and make bold decisions. This is the stage of life in which you discover yourself and plan out your future. Listed above are the fun elements that you will observe in university. Although these will not make you an exemplary student, these will definitely create beautiful memories worth cherishing at all times.  Perhaps you might have done some of those?
