Melaka (or Malacca, or Melacca) is one of the more popular places to go to for a quick holiday. Being only roughly 3 hours away by coach, its popularity is boosted by the plethora of excellent food available. Here are 10 must-eat foods for your next Melaka trip!

1. Chicken Rice Balls

We all know and love the traditional Hainanese chicken rice, but the Melakans have a different spin on the dish. They make their chicken rice into little balls, and the bad thing is you’ll probably have trouble stopping once you start eating.

A great place to go for this dish would be Chop Chung Hwa Restaurant located on the coner of Jonker Street.

2. Satay Celup

This means steamboat satay. You’re not going to find this in Singapore. Instead of the standard skewered meat that we know as Satay, this dish consists of raw or semi-cooked meat and vegetables on skewers, dipped into a hot pot of spicy peanut sauce. Just like a steamboat.

Capitol Satay Celup is one of the best, and you can find it in Lorong Bukit Cina.

3. Gula Melaka Cendol

Melaka’s Cendol uses Gula Melaka (as one could have guessed from the name), and the result is a uniquely delicious cold dessert. This is a must try when you’re in Melaka, and there are a few places where you can get exceptionally good versions.

Aunty Koh’s Cendol has a version heavy in coconut milk, which makes it super smooth and fragrant. Jonker 88 also has one of the most famous Cendols in Melaka.

4. Popiah

What’s so special about popiah? Despite it being pretty common in Singapore, the Melaka version still managed to shine. This is, of course, due to the pork lard they put into their rolls. Yes, pork lard. The resulting popiah is rich and succulent in flavour, definitely a must-try.

The most famous places to get it would be Bunga Raya Popiah or Jonker Street Popiah.

5. Nyonya Laksa

The Nyonya Laksa is another dish that you must try in Melaka (considering the title of this article, it really goes without saying, eh?). The rich, flavourful curry soup, the abundance of ingredients, and the fragrance of the coconut milk makes this dish an ultimate comfort food for many of us.

Great places to grab a bowl of awesome Laksa include Bess Kopitiam and 486 Baba Low.

6. Nyonya Zhang (粽子)

The Nyonya Zhang looks different from the traditional Chinese zhang you can find in Singapore, due to its cool blue colouring. The blue tint is entirely natural, however, due to the addition of a flower called the Bunga Telang, or the blue pea/butterfly pea flower. The taste of the zhang is also different, with the addition of the signature wintermelon that gives it a delicious sweet taste.

Reputed to be the best zhang in Melaka, East and West Rendezvous is the place to go.

7. Nyonya Kueh

When we talk about Peranakan food, kueh is definitely something that’ll come up. Which makes this another definite must eat in Melaka, of course. Unfortunately, there are too many different types of kueh out there, so just try all of them!

Baba Charlie Nyonya Cakes is a really famous outlet to get some of dat kueh.

8. Putu Piring

Okay, we have to give a special mention to Putu Piring. It’s a type of kueh not typically found in Singapore, and is a steamed rice cake with a Gula Melaka filling, resting on shredded young coconut on a piece of banana leaf. It’s a little piece of plate-shaped heaven.

Arguably the most famous outlet would be Putu Piring Tengkera, and they even have a Facebook page!

9. Coconut Milkshake

This dessert looks really simple, and in fact the ingredients are exactly that. However, the taste is absolutely incredible, with the rich and creamy coconut blending with the natural sweetness of the milkshake itself.

The best and most famous place to go would be Klebang Original Coconut Milkshake. The place is basically filled all the time, but customer turnover rate is rather fast.

10. Mille Crepe

So far the things we’ve been talking about were traditional Peranakan food. This one’s different, however. In a surprising twist of events, one of the top 10 is a mille crepe place called Nadeje. They serve some incredible mille crepe, which beats any Singaporean place hands down. The outlet gets crazy long queues like all the time, so try to avoid peak hours like the weekends.

All this writing about food is making me hungry. Maybe I’ll take leave one day to eat all these foods in Melaka.
