The state flag of South Carolina is simple but let me tell you…

That flag is VERY POPULAR here.

Folks LOVE those two symbols.

From helping two kids through 5th grade history I knew South Carolina is the ‘Palmetto’ state…

So I kind of guessed that was a Palmetto tree.

Ding Ding Ding!

I was right!

But what is with the moon?

I’m not kidding… people put this dual image on anything. Everything.

Cars…

They love their state, I’m telling you. And they love those symbols.

My high schooler says she’s kind of surprised to see kids wearing T-shirts with the Tree/Crescent combo. She was telling me it would have been strange to wear a big old OREGON on her shirt back there. Maybe ANOTHER state, or a college you loved. But YOUR OWN state symbols? Strange yes, but it’s interesting to us that folks here are happy to shout it out loud on their chest! (Also the Oregon flag has a large covered wagon on it… not as cool I guess?) —>

We found a T-shirt at Walmart of all places!

Nothing could be finer. I’d wear that!

I had to look up the whole Crescent/Palmetto thing.

Google was very helpful.

The crescent was a symbol used on the South Carolina uniforms during the revolutionary war of independence and when Colonel William Moultrie was asked to create a flag for the South Carolina troops he borrowed the Crescent and put it on a blue background. The story goes that this first flag was flown during the battle of Sullivan Island.

The fortress on the island survived because they used palmetto trees laid over sand walls, helping to survive British Cannon. So later the Palmetto tree was added next to the Crescent Moon.

And now it’s everywhere!

We went on a treasure hunt to see how many we could find in our new town…

WELCOME TO SOUTH CAROLINA!
Smiling Faces, Beautiful Faces.

I agree.

(I’m thinking our Christmas Card photo place??)

There’s plenty of items you can buy with the SC Flag symbols…

Would you like a pedicure?

(Hint: Birthday Present possibilities here…)

Or maybe just buy your own decal for the back of your car, store window or the backside of your toddler?
