“I don’t think it’s fair that students carry the burden of financial limitations at such a young age.”

Back in 2012, Rihanna founded the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF), a nonprofit organization named after her grandparents Clara and Lionel Braithwait, with a mission to “improve the quality of life for communities globally in the areas of health, education, arts, and culture.” Since then, the foundation has continued to carry out her mission and has provided support through the The Clara Brathwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine and through educational initiatives such as the Barbados Micro Grants for School.

To further expand the reach of her initiative, Rihanna and the CLF have launched a new global scholarship program, the ‘Clara Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program’. The scholarship will benefit her home of Barbados, though is also applicable to students within the U.S., Cuba, Guyana, Brazil, Haiti, and Jamaica. Students who apply and are chosen for the scholarship may be awarded up to $50,000 and can be renewed for three years or until the student earns their undergraduate Bachelor’s degree.

“I don’t think it’s fair that students carry the burden of financial limitations at such a young age,” says Rihanna. “We launched the CLF grants initiative this year, these are basic needs that these children don’t have in these schools… something as simple as clean bathrooms.”

Applications for this year’s scholarship will be accepted through June 10.
