Jay Snook interviews Rob Green, the founder of Wall Hop

Art is something that people have always enjoyed. It helps express emotions and there were moments in history when art was for posterity and helped capture good and bad times in the world. It was a primitive form of photographs and museums can still be found all over the world that millions of people visit every year. They can tell a lot about past civilizations and are treasured by many art collectors.

In today’s world art galleries have sprung up all over the internet. But there is a problem, the pictures are usually too small to see or to appreciate the works of art, and many are missing key elements that make searching and buying art a pleasurable experience. Well Rob Green decided to change all of that. He and a few friends created Wall Hop, which is changing the ways people buy and look at art online.

Where did you come up with this concept?

The concept of Wall Hop was really derived from a few different sources.  My Co-Founders (Jason Salzman, Alan Lok) and I believe that the traditional art market isn’t enough to satisfy the evolving needs and wants of today’s consumer.  Every day more interactions and purchases are migrating online.  We saw that very few artists, or galleries had a strong presence online.  Even existing platforms overlook some of the most essential ingredients for cultivating an experience that helps you fall in love with artwork.  Wall Hop is facilitating the emotional connection between a collector and an artist. We shine light on the full story behind each artist and artwork, so that collectors can understand the inspirations and creative process within each artwork.

How long has this gallery been online?

Wall Hop’s online art gallery launched in January of 2015.  Since our launch we’ve seen website traffic double month over month, to over 15,000 unique visitors and on track to double up again this month.  Our clients are giving us feedback, and we’re taking that to heart to make improvements to give people the experience online that they’ve been waiting for.

What different types of art are on this website?

We offer a wide variety of artwork on the website. We don’t want to cater to one specific demographic or type of collector.  We believe that art is for everyone, and our repertoire of artwork reflects that.  We represent artists who are talented students on the cusp of graduation, emerging and mid career artists, to artists who are globally recognized and critically acclaimed.  Original Paintings, Mixed Media, and Fine Art Photography are the mediums of work in our wheelhouse.

Is it just local artists, or are there some famous well known pieces?

We represent artists from all over the globe that are very well known.  Mia Cathcart is a well known UK artists who paints large portraiture abstractions.  Jim Gingerich is a highly sought after artist from the Hamptons, NY who’s elegant paintings are a quintessential piece for any art collector looking for emerging works.  We’ve also interviewed with famous artists from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Russia, New York, Toronto and Berlin.

What are the prices these pieces usually go for?

Because we believe in the notion of accessible artwork, and that there’s a piece for everyone – we’ve aimed to keep our prices in line with that mantra.  Our works range from $100 to $29,000.  There’s a large gap between the low & high end of the spectrum that we represent – which is on purpose.  When people come to Wall Hop, they’re coming to discover something new, to fall in love, and depending on their financial goal we make sure that they’re on target.

How many people helped bring this website online?

There are 3 Co-Founders of Wall Hop.  Myself, Jason Salzman, and Alan Lok.  Beyond that we have an important team of curators, photographers, writers like Jen Blakney, and a solid group of mentors and advisor.

How do you help this website stand alone from the rest?

Wall Hop is the only online art gallery that has an editorial team which offers behind-the-scenes access to the artists’ creative process, their studio, and their inspirations. We take viewers beyond the artwork and into the story behind each piece.  We paint the full picture (no pun intended) for people to cultivate a deep emotional connection between the collector and the artwork.  This is something that even the most exclusive brick-and-mortar galleries in the world can’t offer.

We offer further commentary on bodies of work, artist statements, artist bio’s and of course we offer Free Shipping & Returns in North America to show our buyers that we stand behind our artwork with confidence.

Our vision is to help people fall in love with artwork and to surpass all of their expectations around the type of experience they have when searching for, and purchasing artwork.
