The festive season is filled with parties and fun, but can also bring some awkward moments. We share our top tricks on how to survive the party season.

1. HOSTESS GIFTS: YES OR NO?

Yes for a dinner party, but optional for a cocktail party or bring-your-own event. You will be attending many parties this season and buying a lavish gift for every night out can become a bit excessive on the pocket. Flowers or a bottle of wine are always a great idea. Just attach a card so the host knows who to thank.

2. EXITING A BORING CONVERSATION

Have you found yourself in an endless conversation about the weather? Weasel your way out of this one by saying something polite like, ‘So nice chatting. Would you excuse me? I have to say hi to a friend.’ Heading for a drink could backfire – the person could potentially follow you.

3. CHANGING YOUR RSVP

Be honest and do it right away and not the day before. Only cancel for a legit reason (not a better party, and no made-up stories). Call rather than SMSing or e-mailing, as this may seem a bit insensitive to your friend who has invited you.

4. A LITTLE TOO MUCH BUBBLY

You’ve had a little bit more than you can handle and are starting to feel the effects of that fourth glass of champagne. Call your host to the side and politely excuse yourself before you convince yourself you can handle another round. This is the best way to avoid a hangover and any drunken antics you may get involved in.
