Some of the most stylish interiors feature a harmonising mix of the old and the new in their designs. Indeed, more recently it has become fashionable for contemporary houses to revisit 1920’s art deco designs.

Art deco design was heavily influenced by the burgeoning technologies of the post-war period. This manifested itself in the use of strong, bold colours, geometric shapes, and larger-than-life motifs. Whilst contemporary interiors typically subsist on a minimalist design, they also tend to utilise geometric shapes to encourage the kind of ‘clean living’ that is so popular today. Moreover, contemporary designs tend to use bold colours in small doses, in order to create highlights and lowlights in room interiors. As such, these two design eras may not be so different after all.

The following 10 interiors demonstrate how best to combine art deco extravagance with elegant and simple modern living.

Art Deco Dining Room

The rich, bold red of the walls is highly characteristic of art deco extravagance. The geometric shapes on the chairs, and the glass wall are also art deco in style. The painted canvas reveals a love of art deco motifs, although because the depiction is obviously of a very modern woman, this helps to add a contemporary feel to the room.

1920’s Bathroom mirror

The mirror in this bathroom just screams art deco glamour. The clean edges and structured design is reminiscent of the new, industrial buildings that would have emerged during the post-war period. Also, the tiles in the shower are laid in a perfectly symmetrical pattern – thus adhering to both the contemporary and art deco-style rule books.

Grandiose Living Room

The plush purple sofas and the lavish murals on the wall give this room the kind of extravagant feel that was characteristic of the art deco period.

Contemporary Living

The art deco influences in this room are much more subtle. Geometric shapes are evident in the chair and the lamp, and the large canvas on the wall provides an understated motif to complete to look of this room.

Art Deco Living Room

The fantastic black and yellow is a striking colour combination, and certainly reminiscent of art deco boldness. The feature light fixture also adds architectural interest to this room.

Art Deco Wall Art

The stunning wall art is what really brings the design of this room together. The eclectic mix of furniture and designs adds a kind of jumbled effect that somehow manages to work well in this room.

Modern Art Deco Bedroom

This bedroom design perfectly demonstrates how art deco designs can work well in modern spaces. Instead of representing the technological advancements of the ’20’s, this bedroom features a mural of a modern industrial space.

Purple Art Deco Wall

The bold purple of this wall is very reminiscent of art deco. Similarly, the repeating patterns on the wall carry this theme further.

Elegant Art Deco Bathroom

The small touches of art deco on the wall and the blinds really work well in this room. They are not overpowering, but they do add an interesting edgy to the white bathroom suite.

Art Deco Luxury Home Cinema

This room is probably the ultimate in art deco-inspired design. Not only does it use strong and bold colours, but also geometric shapes, and period lighting. You’ve got to either love it or hate it…

So, art deco can work well in a number of different rooms in the house. Some of the most successful rooms seem to have used art deco in smaller doses, and thus managed to keep an even balance between art deco extravagance and simple, modern living. My favourite design has to be number 9 – the elegant art deco bathroom.
