With Drizly App buy wine and drink one hour later – the new way to purchase wine
It is happening now in fifteen metropolitan areas in the U.S. Shop for wine, beer, and spirits and have it delivered to your home in one hour or less. Is this
new Wine App about to shake up the way we buy our wine and beer? This is how the Drizly Wine App works. You sign up and, depending on where your home is located, the app sets you up with the nearest retailer that is part of the Drizly network of wine and spirit shops. These can be small, independent wine shops or larger liquor retailers. The Drizly Wine App allows you to look through the inventory at that store. You select the items you need and someone from that wine shop will deliver your order within one hour’s time. You must purchase a minimum of $20 and pay a $5 service fee. More than likely you will want to tip the delivery person. At this time, I believe that the only other company that is doing this is Amazon, and just in select areas of the state of Washington. Unlike the Uber model of doing business, Drizly does not hire independent contractors to provide the product. The wine and spirits store uses one of its employees for the delivery. Drizly considers itself a technology company and not a wine dealer.

One of the biggest hurdles for selling wine and spirits is the legal-age issue. Drizly has invented a proprietary I.D. scan mechanism to authenticate the customer is of legal drinking age. There is no cost for the Drizly App and no cost to join. Drizly benefits by setting up a franchise relationship with the wine shops and liquor stores. Drizly has about 18 millon dollars in angel and institutional investors. They plan to grow their business across the U.S. at a steady clip and to be in all the major cities where legalities allow them to operate their alcohol business. I asked Drizly spokesperson Kerin Hogan when Drizly planned to be in the San Francisco Bay Area. The estimate is one year, but it could happen sooner. Currently, Drizly is available in these cities: Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Boulder, Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City (and the Hamptons), Providence, Seattle, St. Louis, Vail and Washington D.C. If you live in one of these cities you may want to put Drizly to the test.

Judging from this list of most popular wines purchased on Drizly at this point, those using Drizly are bargain wine enthusiasts. I do not see a single wine that is over the $15 mark.

Drizly should appeal to very busy people who have little time to shop for wines. They know what wines they enjoy and like the convenience of shopping from their phones. For me, half the fun of shopping for wines is looking through all the wine inventory and finding something new to try. I wouldn’t have that chance using the Drizly App the way it presently works.
