Mortgage Rate Watch: U.S. mortgage rates fell for the first time in three weeks as investors speculated that the Federal Reserve will hold off on tapering bond purchases that are bolstering the economy, Bloomberg News reported. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage dropped to 4.22% from an eight-week high of 4.35%, Freddie Mac said in a statement today.
The jump in borrowing costs from near-record lows in May has slowed the housing recovery by restraining buyer demand. Purchases of previously owned U.S. homes fell in October to the lowest level since June, the National Association of Realtors said yesterday.–David Lott, Founder/Publisher
