Welcome to Celiac Awareness Month Day 7! Today I want to talk about skin care. While many experts claim any skin care products with gluten will penetrate through the skin’s barrier and trigger the disease, the Celiac Society disagrees. “Gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin. If you’re having a reaction to a personal care product (for example, a moisturizer or sunscreen lotion) that contains gluten, you may be allergic to one or more of the other ingredients.”

Well everybody is different, we’ve learned this from how celiac disease/gluten intolerance/gluten sensitivity affects people in numerous ways. With that said, you could be ok using skin care products that contain gluten or you could not. But what if you use hand cream then touch your food? What happens when your lip gloss gets in your mouth? I don’t take the chance. But if you do, avoid using such products on your lips or around your mouth, so you don’t accidentally get any in your moth. Also, avoid using gluten-containing dental products, such as certain mouthwashes and toothpastes. If you’re uncertain about whether a product contains gluten, check the ingredient list on the product label or contact the manufacturer.

Avoiding gluten is easy with Rodan + Fields, a dermatologist developed skin care line. Rodan + Fields was developed by two Stanford trained Dermatologists, Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields – they are also the docs who created the very successful Proactiv acne skin care line – based on their philosophy of Multi-Med® Therapy. This regimen-based approach to treating common skin concerns combines over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical and active cosmetic ingredients in the right combination with optimized, elegant formulations to deliver clinically proven results, without a visit to the dermatologist’s office. All regimens undergo third party clinical tests to ensure safety and efficacy.

Using the same philosophy of multi-step approach with the right ingredients and the right formulations in the right order to tackle sun damage, sensitive skin, adult acne, and anti aging. There are four regimens as well as many other great skin care products and tools.

I recently tried three of Rodan + Fields products and I am very happy with the results. The three step process included (1) using Rodan + Fields ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste in the morning before putting on my make-up, giving my skin a nice glow. (2) After washing my face I used the REDEFINE Night Renewing Serum, which made my skin feel silky smooth. The serum, although comes out thick, goes on thin and is not oily or sticky, and quickly absorbed into my skin. (3) REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum gave my dry lips a smooth texture and moisture they desperately needed. A little goes a long way. Just a nickle size of the paste and serum were enough to cover my whole face.

Each REDEFINE Night Renewing Serum capsule (blue capsule in the image above) contains a potent, proprietary blend of peptides and retinol to visibly improve skin texture and firmness and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Retinol, favored by dermatologists for decades, improves skin texture and minimizes the appearance of pores. Patented time-release technology increases skin’s receptivity throughout the night while reducing potential irritancy. ($90)

When it comes to lips, time and the environment take their toll in a profound way. The smooth, naturally full, defined lips that nature gives us will, over time, become thinner, flatter, less rosy and more lined. Reclaim or maintain the lips of youth with REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum. Each peptide and antioxidant-rich capsule helps lips retain natural moisturizing factors, smoothes lip texture and reduces the appearance of lip wrinkles. ($54)

ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste is a high-glide, oil-free formula designed to promote maximum gentle exfoliation. Use intermittently to enhance cell turnover and improve skin tone and texture. Lucky Magazine reports that it smoothes away rough spots. ($78)
