Challenge #14 Button it Up!
Crafters of every stripe are button hoarders! Buttons are pretty, inexpensive, and extremely versatile. If you are a card maker, quilter, layout artist, or anything in between, you probably have a button hoard! Buttons come in many sizes, styles, shapes, and colors, plus they are easy to store...usually in cute containers! Pull out those bins of buttons and use some of them for your challenge project!

Here is my button project. I will preface this by saying that my daughter, my mother-in-law, and I are all HUGE Lucille Ball fans...hence the photo of Lucy Ricardo. {grin}
I love the episode of the I Love Lucy where Lucy tries to learn to sew. It mirrors my experiences with sewing machines EXACTLY! I found this amazing photo from the show, and it is priceless!
My layout was further inspired by THIS layout by Melinda Spinks, which I saw on Pinterest. I loved her use of the different squares as her background. I wanted to copy that idea, only in a grungy, messy, mismatched sort of way. I dig WAY DEEP into my hoard of papers, and found lots of things that would work for my layout.
As soon as I saw this sentiment stamp in the Stitches Sewing set that Altered Pages gave to me, I had the rest of my layout idea! The sentiment made me think of how watching I Love Lucy keeps me laughing...keeps me in stitches!
I knew this was going to be a heavy layout, and it would be more for displaying than for placing in a scrapbook, therefore I attached my base paper to a sheet of sturdy chipboard. The designer paper is Black and Ivory Paris from Canvas Corp. I rubbed the paper with Range Distress Vintage Photo ink, and then I did a wash with Tattered Angels High Impact Paint Light Gold. I washed over that with Ranger Distress Stain Picket Fence.
To create my layered blocks, I cut out 16 pieces of EXTRA THICK chipboard, 2 x 2 inches. I then trimmed printed paper, digital images from Altered Pages (Antique Sewing and Vintage Sewing), and tissue paper to 2 x 2 inches and attached one image or pattern to each chipboard block.
I stamped directly onto a few of the blocks, to create some collages. I have tons of sewing-themed items in my stash. The issue was not what to use, but what NOT to use!
I added the blocks to the base page, overlapping some, and also overlapping a few of the blocks with the photo. I cut the mannequin from chipboard and from printed paper, and overlapped some of the blocks with "her." Using Canvas Corp canvas and tissue paper, I created a die cut flower.
I used ruler printed twill to create a rolled rose. I used Scor-tape to attach two pieces of twill, back to back, so that where would be a print on both sides. Then I rolled it to make the rose, which I topped with a wood button.
I carried the sewing theme further by making a button card from a piece of 7Gypsies packaging. I trimmed the chipboard packing to size, and used a die to punch a "hanger hole" into the top. I then stamped some button-themed images onto the packaging with archival ink. I tied on a few "fancy" buttons.
I found some small wooden spools in my stash, so I wrapped on with twine, added a pin, and made an embellishment with it.
This was such a fun project! I love that when I look at it, my eye goes directly to the photo of the beautiful Lucille Ball. Every time I look at her photo, I start to giggle! Now, hoarders, I hit the mother lode of hoarded stuff on this layout! I hope you had fun looking!
