Gambia holidays are always popular and the tiny west African nation is a big draw for European tourists in an often overlooked area of Africa. With flight times of just six hours from the UK,
it’s no surprise that The Gambia’s appealing combination of warm weather, golden beaches and fascinating wildlife keeps visitors returning year after year.
At just 50km wide, The Gambia is one of Africa’s smallest countries – a tiny sliver of land that boasts a range of accommodation, with a variety of resorts along the coast and secluded eco lodges
inland. The best thing about visiting such a tiny country is that everything is within easy reach and its possible to pack loads of activites into your Gambia holiday.
The Gambia is perhaps most popular for its beaches and there are an impressive collection of golden-sand enclaves along its Atlantic-facing coast. The Gambia’s beaches are all that you’d expect
from a tropical country, with miles of uninterrupted sand fringed by lines of swaying palm trees.
Secluded Sanyang Beach is known locally as ‘Paradise Beach’ and for good reason; it’s off the beaten track of the larger hotels and is the perfect place to soak up the
sun in a low-key environment. Cape Point Beach in Northern Kombo another great stretch of sand for relaxing in peace and quiet, with the option of enjoying some windsurfing and sailing if you
fancy something a bit more active.
The beaches of the Fajara region near capital Banjul are very varied; those near Bakau – just east of Banjul - are flanked by dramatic red cliffs offering spectacular sunset views, while those
near Kotu Strand are far wider and allow for sunbathing even at high tide.
Inland from The Gambia’s golden beaches, there is also plenty of memorable sights to see. The River Gambia National Park (aka Baboon Island) is made up of five islands
in the Gambia River. Whilst visitors are not permitted on the islands, on a boat tour it’s possible to spot once-captiured chimpanzees that have been reintroduced to the wild.
Like The Gambia itself, the Abuko Nature Reserve is small but there is lots to see. Over 250 birds and 50 mammals call Abuko home; some of its most famous residents include bush babies, Nile
crocodiles and green monkeys. Monkey-lovers will also not want to miss a trip to the Bijilo Forest Park near Banjul where various species of monkey swing overhead, regularly descending from the
trees for food and to investigate human visitors.
For a taste of local life on your Gambia holidayshead to the capital city Banjul, which is unusually
situated on an island and only accessible by one road. Banjul is a bustling port, with noisy street markets tucked in amongst the faded remnants of colonial architecture.
