As India mourns the passing of one of the world’s great leaders and great teachers, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, we celebrate his life and his work. We’re spotlighting interesting facts about Dr. Kalam!

1. As a young man in school, his teachers described him as a bright and hardworking student who had a strong desire to learn and spend hours on his studies.

2. Kamal studied physics at St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli and later aerospace engineering at Madras Institute of Technology, the background that would lead to his famous nuclear science career as India’s “Missile Man.”

3. He was a prolific writer, writing over a dozen books on science, spirituality, and his incredible life.



His latest book, pictured above, is a guide for youth to discover interesting STEM career paths.

4. Dr. Kalam’s 79th birthday was recognized as World Student Day by the United Nations.

“Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurial and moral leadership among students and become their role model.”

5. After his presidency, Kalam dedicated the rest of his life to teaching, becoming a professor at various universities in India. He was giving his a lecture at IIM Shillong in his final moments of life.
