In his first full-length presentation in Singapore, world-renowned gamelan composer Rahayu Supanggah, together with an orchestra with musicians from across the Malay archipelago, brings you a mesmerising evening of compositions and rearrangements inspired by the reign of the Srivijayan empire in the region from the 7th–9th Century. Sakti premiered at the Spoleto Festival, Italy in 2013 as a 20-minute music and dance performance. It combines distinct musical styles from Java and Sumatra into a full-scale concert, accompanied by dances hailing from Palembang, South Sumatra.

With more than 100 original scores to his name, Rahayu Supanggah is best known for his collaborations with international artists, including the legendary British director Peter Brook in Mahabharata (1994), Singapore’s Ong Keng Sen in Lear (1995), Robert Wilson in I La Galigo (2004), as well as Sergio Leone and Kronos Quartet. A professor of ethnomusicology and composition, he is also an internationally acclaimed musician, performer and curator known to experiment and create new music genres. Supanggah has won several prestigious awards including Best Composer at the Asian Film Festival in Hong Kong, World Master on Music and Culture in Seoul, and the Jakarta Academy Award. His award-winning compositions reflect traditional Javanese karawitan, contemporary Indonesian music rooted in the traditional music of various regions of Indonesia and Asia, concert music, as well as music for dance, theatre, and film.
