For all the users of the web around the globe, one thing that they take for granted is search. Internet search technology has grown by leaps and bounds since it came into existence just a couple of decades ago. People who use the Internet type in the keywords and get the results that they desire, but not many know that the internet economy is driven by search technology. If Google is the behemoth that it is today, it is because of the rapid strides taken by it to drive search technology.

The technology benefits not just the end user; it also benefits the retailers, the manufacturers, the advertisers etc. In fact, the search economy is so huge that it runs into billions of dollars every year. But still, the technology is in its infancy. For example, images and videos are still found by Google and other search engines based on the text that the user has added. This is one technology that is sure to figure in the coming years. Search engines will be able to find images and video without the aid of text and this will happen in the future. Voice recognition tools like Siri and others have also started improving the search scenario. Augmented reality tools could also be used in future to help improve search performance.

The problem that search engines face is the volume of information that is available on the internet. Daily new information gets uploaded which the search engines need to spider and collate. Also, the time that a person wishes to wait for the results is also small, so the relevant results need to be found very fast and also provided to the user immediately. With so much data it becomes really difficult to provide exact answers to the searches and this is the reason some not so exact search results are found.

People using smartphones have grown drastically and as a consequence, a lot of search queries come from them. Improving mobile search is the next big thing and this is bound to happen very soon. Personalized searches are the net big technology change. People are using and providing personal information quite easily nowadays as they use their phones frequently. This information is a means to help them find what they are looking for. Most personalized searches cater to the domestic or local market but it can also cater to a larger market depending on what the person searches periodically.

Technology is changing very fast. We used to type a keyword into a search engine and we used to get results, which we used to sift and find the ones we needed. Then the age of typing a full search query appeared where we were typing in long sentences to get results. Algorithm changes happened and results started getting better and better. With mobile searches getting more prominence, voice search has become quite popular, though it needs a lot of fine-tuning. Personalized searches are gaining ground but there is an ethical issue here and it is a thin line to tread. People are trusting and provide their information and if that information is used for helping them in their searches, it may sound nice, but the information can also be misused. It can be useful for an advertiser but the information in the wrong hands can be devastating for the user. This is one of the points that the search engines should take into account when they incorporate this technology.

There are going to be other technological breakthroughs in the internet search space. Nobody envisioned that there would be something known as a search engine three decades ago, but now we cannot live without a search engine. Similarly, other technological advances are bound to happen and better the quality of the search engine results. Technology may change but search engines are here to stay.
