The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill today (March 11) announced the co-chairs of a campus-wide fund-raising campaign expected to launch publicly in the fall of 2017.
The co-chairs will rotate through three groups of three-member teams during the life of the campaign. They are:

Roger L. Perry Sr. of Chapel Hill
John L. Townsend III of Greenwich, Connecticut
Public Launch Phase
Julia Sprunt Grumbles of Chapel Hill
W. Lowry Caudill (Lowry) of Durham, North Carolina
John G. Ellison Jr. of Greensboro, North Carolina
Closing Phase
Michael D. Kennedy of Atlanta, Georgia

“We’re very honored and excited to have such a distinguished group of volunteers lead this campaign,” UNC Chancellor Carol L. Folt said. “They will bring a tremendous amount of wisdom, experience and passion to the job, along with a diversity of perspectives that will enrich every aspect of the campaign.
“Our co-chairs are true-blue Tar Heels who didn’t hesitate to say ‘Yes’ when we asked them to sign on. That attests to their commitment to Carolina, and to the promise of this campaign. Thanks to their leadership and vision, this will be a campaign like no other, for a university like no other.”
The first team of co-chairs will serve until the campaign’s public launch and work with the University administration to establish campaign priorities and goals, as well as to build out the campaign’s volunteer leadership and structure. The second team of co-chairs will follow with a three-year term to guide the public launch, and the final team will serve a three-year term to close out the campaign.
In 2015, the first year of the campaign’s quiet phase, the University raised nearly $447 million, setting an all-time record in its 222-year history. The campaign is UNC’s first major fund-raising drive since Carolina First, which ended in December 2007 and raised $2.38 billion. A goal has not been established for the upcoming campaign.

John L. Townsend III, Roger L. Perry Sr. and Barbara Rosser Hyde
Barbara Rosser Hyde
Hyde, a Morehead Scholar and UNC graduate with bachelor’s degrees in English and religious studies, is president of the J.R. Hyde III Family Foundation in Memphis, TN. After graduation and a brief time as a teacher in Kenya, she began her career in the University’s development office and went on to serve as the executive director of the Arts and Sciences Foundation. She served two terms on the UNC Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2013, during which time she was vice chair. She co-founded and co-chaired the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council and was a member of the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee. She also chaired the Advisory Board for the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, of which she has been a major supporter. She is also a key supporter of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Foundation and the Honors Program in the College of Arts & Sciences. Hyde is a member of the Order of the Old Well, which recognizes UNC students, faculty and staff of high character who have demonstrated outstanding humanitarian service. She is also a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and is a 2010 recipient of the UNC General Alumni Association Distinguished Service Medal.
Roger L. Perry Sr.
Perry, a UNC political science alumnus and a graduate of The Executive Program at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, is president of East West Partners Management Company, a real estate development and management company, in Chapel Hill. Since 1983, East West Partners has developed more residential real estate in North Carolina than any other company. In 2003, Perry was appointed to the UNC Board of Trustees, which he chaired from 2007 to 2009. As chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, he oversaw approximately $2 billion in new University construction. He was a member of the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee. As a member of the UNC Board of Visitors, he helped lead fund-raising efforts for the Finley Golf Course renovation. Perry has received the UNC General Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Medal, and in 2014 he was the inaugural J. W. Willie York Award winner for Community Builders.
John L. Townsend III
Townsend, a UNC alumnus and M.B.A. graduate, most recently served as managing partner and chief operating officer at Tiger Management, LLC. Prior, he spent nearly 15 years at Goldman, Sachs & Co. as a general partner and as managing director. He also was employed at Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette. Townsend was a member of the UNC Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2013 and has served on the executive committee of the UNC Investment Fund, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School’s Board of Visitors and Ackland Art Museum’s National Advisory Board. His philanthropy spans the campus and includes support to UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Ackland Art Museum and the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, among others. Additionally, Townsend has been a volunteer leader for the Grand Teton National Park Foundation and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation, among several other organizations.

Julia Sprunt Grumbles
Grumbles received a B.A. in history at Carolina. She has retired as corporate vice president of human resources, public relations and corporate marketing resources for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. She is a member of the UNC Board of Trustees, and the boards of the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and UNC Health Care System. She served on the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee and co-founded the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council. She has taught in UNC’s Entrepreneurship Minor in the College of Arts and Sciences and from 2012 to 2013 served as interim vice chancellor for University development. Her honors include UNC’s William Richardson Davie Award and the UNC General Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Medal. She also has received the National Cable Television Association’s Vanguard Award for Marketing, one of the cable industry’s most prestigious honors.
W. Lowry Caudill (Lowry)
Caudill, co-founder of Magellan Laboratories Incorporated, received a B.S. degree in chemistry at UNC and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington. He chaired the UNC Board of Trustees from 2013 through 2015 and remains a member. His other service to Carolina includes chairing the Chancellor’s Innovation Circle and the Executive Board of the Educational Foundation, as well as serving on the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Board of Visitors and the Advisory Working Group for the Entrepreneurship Minor in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was a Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee member. His honors include a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Carolina and a Distinguished Service Medal from the UNC General Alumni Association. He and his Magellan Laboratories business partner, Alfred G. Childers, have received the North Carolina Council for Entrepreneurial Development Entrepreneurial Excellence Award.
John G. Ellison Jr.
Ellison, chairman of the Ellison Co., earned his B.A. in history and M.B.A. at Carolina. He has served on multiple boards, including the UNC Board of Visitors and the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities Advisory Board. In 2003, he began an eight-year tenure on the UNC Board of Trustees, during which time he partnered with then-Student Body President J.J. Raynor to produce “Carolina – the Best Place to Teach, Learn and Discover,” a strategic plan encompassing more than 1,000 interviews on how to improve the quality of education at Carolina. He has supported many areas on campus, including UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, Carolina Performing Arts and student aid. His honors include UNC’s William Richardson Davie Award and the UNC General Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Medal.
Closing Phase
Michael D. Kennedy
Michael D. Kennedy
Kennedy is a senior partner at Korn/Ferry International. He graduated from Carolina, earning a B.A. in history with highest honors, and went on to get an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. In 2011, he was appointed by President Barack Obama to chair the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, the largest pension fund in the country. At Carolina, Kennedy has been instrumental in recruiting alumni of color to volunteer and leadership roles to support the University. He has served on several boards, including at the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities and the UNC Center for the Study of the American South. He chaired the UNC Board of Visitors for two consecutive terms and is a strong supporter of the UNC School of Education. He has received UNC’s William Richardson Davie Award, and the UNC General Alumni Association has recognized him with the Harvey E. Beech Outstanding Alumni Award.
