6 Best Cities to Escape the Cold

Either way, if hours of sunshine and balmy breezes are in your sights, here are the six best places to live to escape the cold.

Yuma, Arizona

Yuma deserves its reputation as the unofficial “snowbird” capital of the US. Officially, it’s America’s sunniest city, with clear sunny skies over 90 percent of the time. It’s also the least humid city, with the fewest rainy days. This border town has easy access to tourist-friendly Mexican towns, as well as casinos and shopping malls. Book a short-term visit in one of the many resort properties, or set up house in a long-term RV park and soak up the sun.

Coronado, California

Miles of beach, a Mediterranean climate, and the laid-back California vibe make Coronado Island a perfect place to escape the cold. The temperature averages a pleasant 72 degrees year round. Both Parents magazine and the Travel Channel gave Coronado beaches number one ratings, and the iconic Hotel Del Coronado is a luxurious must-see. Take the ferry for a fabulous view of the San Diego skyline. Stroll the historic South Beach and you might catch the hull of the sunken Monte Carlo–or a few Navy SEALs doing water drills.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fondly known as America’s Venice (complete with gondola rides), Fort Lauderdale is a water- and sun-lover’s paradise. Lounge on a piece of the city’s 23 miles of beaches, or go shopping on quaint Las Olas Boulevard. With temperatures that average between 65 and 85 degrees year-round, you can soak up the sun. Fort Lauderdale has a playboy reputation—tour Millionaire’s Row and check out the yachts and fabulous homes.

San Antonio, Texas

Escape the cold and turn up the heat in the most romantic city in America, according to restaurant site OpenTable.com. San Antonio’s daily temps average between 70 and 90 degrees, and water breezes keep humidity low. Foodies and art aficionados love San Antonio; the River Walk is an oasis of trendy restaurants and museums. The city is also home to Geekdom, a tech start-up incubator focused on making San Antonio a high-tech hub.

Charleston, South Carolina

The leisurely southern pace and delicious low country cuisine makes Charleston a perfect place to kick cold weather. The city has taken top honors as America’s top city by Condé Nast Travelers three years in a row. Award-winning golf, pristine architecture, Civil War history, and fabulous beaches offer even the most discriminating visitors something to indulge in. Needless to say, the climate is tropical and warm almost all the time.

Maui, Hawaii

Maui’s weather is predictable and perfect, averaging an ideal 80 degrees year-round. The island is practically paradise, with miles of pristine beaches, unbelievably blue water and skies, and delectable cuisine—not to mention the surfing, sailing and whales. Drive the Hana Highway and take in the extraordinary waterfalls.

When you want to escape the cold, California, Texas and Florida are home to many sunny runners-up; think Long Beach, Corpus Christi and Miami. Where’s your favorite place to soak up the sun? Leave a suggestion in the comments below.
