Confession: I’m secretly obsessed with Day In the Life content, especially when it comes to working moms. I love seeing how other working moms balance their busy days so I can get ideas on how to make my own busy days run smoother and more efficiently. I’m also just a very routine-oriented person in general, which probably explains why I’m a big fan of DITL content!
I’ve shared my own Day In The Life of a Working Mom on my Instagram stories a couple times before, but I thought it would be fun to share it again in a blog post so I can elaborate a little more about my daily routine. Here’s what a typical work day looks like for me and why:
5 a.m. – I wake up and get myself ready for the day. Then I’ll go into the kitchen and make myself some coffee while I do any last minute prep like pack Aidan’s daycare bag or pack my gym bag.
6 a.m. – Aidan wakes up and I get him ready for the day. I make us breakfast while he plays with his toys. After we eat together, we hang out in his playroom.
7 a.m. – Chris is awake and takes over with Aidan for the next hour, then takes him to school around 8 a.m. I leave for work at 7 a.m. and commute for about 30 minutes. I’m a huge fan of podcasts and audiobooks, so I indulge in my favorites while I drive.
7:30 a.m. – I arrive at work, check emails, and make my to-do list for the day.
8 a.m. – Get to work! I’m a content specialist, so my job consists of a lot of writing and content creation. Most days I have meetings, too.
11:30 a.m. – Lunch! I get an hour, so most days I try to work out in my work’s fitness center and eat lunch afterward. Other days I’ll do “family admin” (schedule appointments, pay bills, buy stuff we need online, etc.) on my laptop while I eat my lunch. Some days I’ll work on stuff for Metro EDGE, a young professionals group I’m a member of.
12:30 p.m. – Back to work and meetings.
4:30 p.m. – Start my commute home. I listen to more podcasts and audiobooks.
5:15 p.m. – I pick up Aidan from daycare while Chris starts cooking dinner. (He works from home which adds a ton of flexibility to our family life). Best part of my day is seeing Aidan’s face light up when I walk into his classroom!
5:30 p.m. – Aidan and I get home and we eat dinner as a family.
6 p.m. – Family time! Normally this consists of Chris and I playing with Aidan in his playroom.
6:45 p.m. – We start Aidan’s bedtime routine. I usually bathe Aidan and brush his teeth while Chris walks Otis. After Chris gets back from the walk, we both read books to Aidan before he goes to sleep.
7:30 p.m. Aidan’s in bed. Since Chris cooks most nights, I clean up the kitchen. Once the kitchen is clean, I usually hang out in my office and do more family admin, stuff for Metro EDGE, or work on my blog.
9pm – Lights out!
I’m pretty happy with how my daily work routine looks these days. It didn’t always look so streamlined. During my first year of motherhood, I didn’t have a routine or make time for my hobbies. I was sleep-deprived, breastfeeding, and just trying to get through each day! I guess it’s true what my more seasoned mom friends told me during those early days: it gets easier.
