An Interview With Catriona McPherson:
I LOVED the intro to Kissin’ Don’t Kill. How do you manage to keep up the humor while making your work suspenseful?
Thank you! I do think about bad taste sometimes (then I usually just go ahead anyway).
But I don’t think humour and suspense are an odd combination actually. Making someone jump and drop her knitting feels quite similar to making someone laugh – in both cases you’re getting a really visceral response. A solemn tone feels much more jarring to me in the suspense or thriller genre. In fact, if the tone gets too sombre I tend to laugh anyway. I’m too ashamed to name the po-faced books that have cracked me up so let me just say that I still remember watching Die Hard the first time and deciding I liked action-adventure after all. (But remember the last one? Die Hard XI: Decomposing – no humour at all and that made the action much less interesting.)
What is it you loved most about creating a work for Killer Nashville Noir: Cold-Blooded?
“Cold-Blooded” as an after-the-colon descriptor gave lots of scope to create unsympathetic characters. That’s the joy of a short story: people you might not want to spend three hundred pages of a novel with are fine company for a page or two. Also, I’m still new enough in this country to be enchanted by the very thought of Nashville. When I was at Killer Nashville and bunked off to the Country Music Hall of Fame, I had a definite “how is this my life?” moment.
Which of your books is your favorite and why?
Oy oy oy. Can I have two? I’ve got a soft spot for DANDY GILVER AND THE PROPER TREATMENT OF BLOODSTAINS, where my posh detective goes undercover as a servant during the general strike of 1926. I’m massively unposh and it was the first time I’d set one of the series amongst my people – the scullery maids and bootboys. But also THE DAY SHE DIED. I hadn’t written wee kids before and it was great to find out from readers that I’d managed to make under-fives into distinct and engaging characters. And I had a lot of fun with the protagonist’s toxic mother. Nuance is all very well but sometimes there’s nothing like a good baddie.
