Our regular fashion and beauty writer, Julia, shares her new found love for cruelty-free, mineral make-up, Youngblood.

To say I’m a beauty addict is no exaggeration, so when I made the Youngblood discovery and fell head-over-heels, I knew I had to share it with all my internet besties.

Finding the perfect foundation is almost impossible. I may think my new liquid base is ace, and then a humid day wreaks havoc on the perfect canvas I’ve created. Foundation is impossible! It could oxidise as it sets, slide off your face on an oily-skin day, or even cause pesky breakouts.

And then I discovered Youngblood Mineral Makeup which scores Great on Good On You Ratings System.

I remember the moment I took a dense kabuki brush and buffed the mineral powder into my skin in a swirling motion and looked in the mirror. I was stunned – how could a powder create such a full coverage and still manage to look natural?

It’s completely natural and doesn’t test on animals getting the tick of approval by PETA for being a cruelty-free company!

The Youngblood Story

The brand formed out of a desire to create a foundation for those with extremely sensitive skin, whether it was due to rosacea, acne, cosmetic surgery or laser treatment, by medical skincare expert Pauline Youngblood.

Pauline worked with chemists to develop the perfect foundation – one that would cover any redness or scarring and still give the skin a chance to heal. The finished product had to be non-comedogenic, free of petrochemicals and irritants and highly pigmented. So in plain English? It had to be completely natural.

After months of testing, Pauline finally settled on a foundation that ticked all the boxes. The patients who needed Pauline’s product after surgery continued using it long after they’d healed, which encouraged Pauline to found the brand in 1996 and expand the range.

Jessica Alba is a huge fan

Unlike many other mineral brands, Youngblood’s products are housed in sleek, sophisticated packaging, and appeal to the professional market as well as consumers. This salon-exclusive brand was developed in the USA, used by makeup artists all over the world and sold on the Good On You store.  The brand has a celebrity cult-following as well – Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, and Gwyneth Paltrow are all known fans of the brand.

My Love Affair With Youngblood

Since moving to Australia, I’ve had to cut my makeup collection down by about 75%. I still own more makeup than the average gal, but I’ve been trying to simplify my life and slowly weed out the products that fail to meet cruelty-free standards.

Now that I’ve discovered Youngblood, I know where my money will be going when I run out of foundation or can’t help but buy yet another red lipstick. Since I started using the brand six months ago, my skin has been clearer than ever, and I love that the brand aims to emphasise natural beauty all while delivering a cruelty-free product.

Last month, I watched my younger sister, Sarah, walk down the aisle. She hired a Youngblood makeup artist to create her wedding day look – a soft brown smoky eye, rosy cheeks, and a flawless nude pout to complement her vintage-inspired gown.

My foundation didn’t budge that day – not from crying into my bouquet at the front of the church, sweating nervously before my Maid of Honour speech, or hitting the dance floor with my friends. Sarah’s look didn’t fade either. But what I loved most is that she looked like herself that day. Not cakey or made up, just beautiful and confident through and through.

I haven’t been paid by Youngblood to write this review – in fact they don’t even know I’m writing it! This is completely my personal experience, and one I wanted to share with the Good On You community, because when we discover something that ticks our value boxes, we think our friends should know too!
