Pizza tossing record smashed in China
The record for largest number of pizzas simultaneously tossed was broken on Wednesday (October 28) at an event in Shanghai. 511 pizzas were tossed.
Altogether 525 people gathered at a hotel in Shanghai where the event was held on Thursday morning, but 14 of them failed to make the challenge according to the rules.
The current Record was set with 388 Papa John’s staff tossing pizza in London in June.
Participants are required to stretch and toss the pizza dough in a traditional way and keep doing that for a minimum of one minute, maintaining the size of pizza dough as long as 30.5 centimeter.
“I am a little bit nervous at the beginning. I don’t want to affect the record challenging because of my own failure. When I start to toss, I forget about nervous and only focus on the dough. I think the pizza dough becomes one part of my body. It’s interesting. It’s an very interesting experience,” said 43-year-old participant Michell Zhao.
The Guinness World Record certification officer Cheng Dong announced the record attempt was successfully approved.
“The whole number of participants to challenge the record is 525. Sadly, 14 of them failed to make the challenge according to the rule. So the final result is 511. Congratulations, it’s a new Guinness world record,” said Cheng.
As most of participants were breast cancer patients, Peter Clarke, the General Manager of Pudong Shangri-la, said the event organized to raise awareness for the disease.
“It’s very exciting. We try to do something different every year and we said this year it would be pizza toss. We said the goal would be 450 or 480. We ended up with 511 people, all doing the same thing, having fun in the room and raising money and awareness for breast cancer. So I think all in all, a very successful event,” said Clarke.
All the pizzas were sold out on the street afterwards, and the money from pizza sales was donated to ‘More than Aware’ – a cancer charity.
