Movement Detroit, a mainstay for technoheads and underground music lovers, hosted in the city of Detroit which is currently nursing a dwindling economy. Public services Americans simply assume to have are in shambles. Amenities like libraries, parks and recreation programs are becoming scarce and Creditors will try to take the museums, the arenas, and the public buildings that define Detroit. However, there is a growing educated and cultured community. Many visual artists and producers are flourishing in the city and Movement is brining money and attention to Detroit. Artists such as Danny Brown, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, and more are still very much involved with their home communities, a few of which are the founders of Movement.

Movement Festival is not only one of the highest rated festivals in the US, it’s one of the most historically important events of the year. More than just a festival, the event is a celebration of Detroit’s musical roots, and more specifically, techno.

Since its inception in 2000, Movement has served as an underground dance music paradise. While the lineup has since expanded to cover everything from hip-hop to more mainstream electronic acts, it hasn’t lost touch with its origins. In fact, this year boasts such international techno favorites as Ben Klock, Marcell Dettmann, Loco Dice, Dubfire b2b Hot Since 82 and many more. In addition to veterans like Richie Hawtin, Stacey Pullen and Henrik Schwarz, it’s enough to have any underground dance music fan salivating.

On top of this, the festival has announced two of its most widely appealing dance acts to date: Dog Blood and Disclosure. The former, a collaboration between Skrillex and Boys Noize, has been absent on the festival circuit in the wake of Jack Ü. Taking to a techno-oriented festival however, it may prove a chance for Dog Blood to showcase some of their deeper interests. Disclosure represents the festival’s ambition to broaden its aesthetic, which — along with choices like Snoop Dog who will play a set as DJ Snoopadelic — is ultimately a keen marketing move on their part. If anything, it will only help expose new fans to the sounds of artists like Joseph Capriati, Clark, and Recondite which we can all agree is a good thing for everyone.

Movement will feature six state-of-the-art stages, more than 100 artists, numerous visual installations, and a slew of official after-parties that will take you deep into an evening of dance-music splendor.

Movement and the Auto Show are the only large-scale events that routinely happen year in, year out in downtown Detroit, reflecting the city’s two leading exports. If one is going to flourish and the other dwindle, given the state of the auto industry, my bet is on techno—it’s never needed a bailout.

Tickets are available only as three-day passes ($130 standard, $260 VIP) and can be purchased at Movement.us.
