Occupational Therapist – Children’s Hospital in Rapid City South Dakota

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Occupational Therapist develops, coordinates and implements individual therapy programs for clients with special needs, and develops assigned programs.

DIMENSIONS:

Performs Individual Therapy: 95% of the Work Period

Develops Assigned Programs: 5% of the Work Period

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Develops and implements individual therapy programs for clients as part of a comprehensive team, in accordance with facility policies and procedures for individualized education or family service plans
Evaluates client’s needs including: sensory development, fine motor skills, muscle tone, range of motion, muscle strength, visual skills, visual-perceptual skills and activities of daily living. Evaluates in special programs (i.e. seating/positioning, power mobility, UE casting, splinting and assistive technology).
Monitors conditions and maintenance of patient adaptive equipment recommending appropriate adjustments and improvements.
Communicates, consults, and works closely with parents/guardians, other team members, external agencies, and other professionals on therapy programs, goals, progress, adaptive equipment and other recommendations; consults with physicians, primary nurses, and other health Care professionals to meet the medical needs of individual clients.
Prepares and maintains therapy records and agency documentation.
Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with healthCare agencies, school districts and other external agencies.
Follows agency infection control policies and procedures.
Prepares and conducts professional in-services and programs as requested and provides leadership and support in specific areas of program development as assigned.
Supervises occupational therapy student affiliations.
Performs related duties to include driving company vehicles to assigned locations, maintaining orderliness of assigned therapy areas, identifying needs for equipment and supplies, and completing equipment and supply requisitions.
Satisfactory attendance and punctuality is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters degree as an Occupational Therapist from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy and current licensure in the State of South Dakota is required. (Individuals who have obtained a bachelors degree in OT in the past are grandfathered in and may apply).

A valid South Dakota driver's license is also required.

Prior Occupational Therapy experience working with pediatric patients is preferred.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Requires full range of body motion including the ability to stoop, kneel, reach, stand and walk for extensive periods of time; push, pull and grasp items, finger dexterity, eye/hand coordination, and the ability to assist in lifting patients weighing 50 pounds, using proper body mechanics. Requires corrected vision (including depth perception), and hearing to normal range.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a variety of environments including the clinic, client’s home, school classrooms, contracting agencies, or other healthCare facilities. This position has extensive personal contact with patients, family members, educational personnel, and other health Care staff when implementing individual therapy programs.

This position has been evaluated as a Level I in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA definition of Occupational Exposure to blood-borne pathogens).

Level I: Positions in this category are required to perform tasks which involve exposure to blood, potentially infectious body fluids, or hazardous waste.
