Perusing the classifieds for interesting wagons this week, I came across quite a few and thought it would be a good chance to look at some sporty 5-doors. To level the playing field slightly, all are automatics. While that may cause some of you to groan, they make up for a lack of manual with distinctive styling, plenty of power and rarity that will set you apart from the crowd. Which is the one you’d choose?

Amulet Red is quite rare on the S6; to date, I believe I’ve only come across 3 or 4 in all my years of loving Audi Avants. The C5 is also a great looking wagon with plenty of scoot from the V8. As I’ve previously said, the lack of air suspension and turbochargers makes for less repairs and the belt-driven V8 doesn’t have the same guide problems that the BBK we’ll see next is now famous for. The downside? You get a transmission that’s nearly made of glass, and finding a good one can be quite hard. But here’s a lovely example with below average mileage and in well above average condition with maintenance. The price is strong for the C5 market as you can find one for half this ask, but not in this condition or color.

Most recent maintenance include: new coolant reservoir tank, fuel filter, carbon activated cabin (pollen) air filter, transmission and differential service (filter, gasket, fluids), upper control arms, valley pan gasket, oil pressure sensor, window regulator, brand new Falken all-season tires, alignment performed, power steering hose, accessory belt (serpentine) along with new tensioner and idler pulley. Items to note:
On visual inspection, the rear brake pads will need replacing sooner than later. They do not squeak or squeal currently and braking performance has not been compromised. Front brakes are > 90%. The front bumper and hood have rock chips and can use a re-spray if a show quality car is what you seek. The drivers seat alcantra has seen better days but all other seats are excellent.

I believe my asking price is fair considering the condition, mileage and rarity of the vehicle. Imola Yellow isn’t quite a popular on the B5 and B6 as the more notorious Nogaro Blue Pearl, but still is a fetching shade and sets this example apart. If anything, it’s more rare than the blue. Condition is certainly very good if not above average and miles are below average. Some downsides are that the 2004 model S4s were more glitchy than the later models and the BBK is considered a timebomb by some. But, the price is right about where it should be and this is a nice looker with plenty of sport and a package that suits enthusiasts well – as long as they don’t need to carry too much.

Considered “Unicorns” by many BMW faithful, loaded M-Sport wagons get them all drooling, though usually it’s the manual sort that bring the big crowds. As with the others on this page, they’re exceedingly rare – and, were exceedingly expensive when new. Unlike the Audis, these BMWs still demand strong money despite lower performance and rear-drive only status. Here, I’m left questioning the sanity of asking nearly $34,000 for a 6 year old, 230 horsepower rear-drive automatic wagon. For arguments sake, you could buy a brand new base model 328i Sport Wagon for only a bit more and get aggressive financing through BMW, never mind the warranty. The whole point of buying these used cars is that you can find a nice one that has depreciated to the point of being much more affordable such that you can buy a performance car that originally was out (often, well out) of your budget. This isn’t it. It’s a cool 5-door in a lovely color and great condition with low miles, but it’s also at a massive performance disadvantage to the rest of the players here. Of all of them, it’s by far the biggest poseur in an expensive suit.

When you consider plunking down over $30,000 for an automatic rear-drive sport wagon, if you don’t consider at least looking at the E55 AMG you’re nuts. Is it dynamically as good as the BMW? Probably not. But in additional to being larger and more luxurious, it’s seriously fast. A claimed 640 horsepower is conjured from the supercharged V8 warmed over by Renntech, which is the best part of 3 times as much power as the 328i produces. In terms of rarity, it has to be on par if not more exclusive than the E91 M-Sport. Yes, there are more miles and it’s older, but at the same price, I’d have the Mercedes…if only it weren’t black.

The E63 is a bit of a strange duck, since it was initially launched with the awesome 6.2 liter V8 also seen in the SLS Gullwing. Why “63” sounded better than “62” I’m not sure, but to confuse the matter even more Mercedes-Benz replaced that motor in 2011 with a similar performing 5.5 liter V8. The supercharged one from the E55, you’d think? No, a new M157 twin-turbocharged version. Outfitted with the optional performance package, the revised motor was equally a screamer, with much more horsepower than you could possibly use in your daily commute. This particular one is thankfully not black and looks really very nice, with quite low mileage and in perfect condition. Yes, it’s 4 years old, but it can still rip your face off and do so for little more than a fully loaded 328i or Allroad.
Of all of these wagons, I have to say that I think the cheapest might be the most appealing to me. I like the idea of the AMG wagons, but the visual execution somehow is always lacking. The BMW is just insanely priced. So, no surprise to many, I’d pick one of the Audis. And while the S6 would probably be the smarter choice of the two, I think the lower mileage and sportier look of the Imola Yellow S4 wins my vote this round. Which do you like?
