The Cayenne is one of those fringe vehicles I find myself liking more and more everyday. Why the change of heart? Because it started out as a vehicle designed to get suburban housewives and other social climbers behind the wheel of a Porsche. You could get it with an automatic, leather everything, and a naturally-aspirated V6 for puttering off to one of those awful “drinking wine while painting terrible watercolors” parties and fit right in amongst the RX330s, Volvo XC90s and whatever other lifted appliance was en vogue.
Nowadays, I look at editions like this brawny 2009 GTS model and can see past the atrocities of both Porsche producing an SUV and one that is often purchased purely for prestige points and little else. But then again, how many Porsches – 911s, 944s, 928s included – were acquired simply for the pleasure of saying you owned a Porsche? Then, combine that with limited storage space and typically warm-weather use, and suddenly the Cayenne makes a lot more sense: Porsche brakes, Porsche transmission, Porsche chassis, V8 power, and the ability to haul a lot of crap while driving in inclement weather. Not so bad anymore, is it?
