It’s always hard to top the original. The MkI GTI is revered for being the progenitor of the hot hatch breed, remaining a top choice to this day for those who want affordable, practical thrills. The MkII GTI has steadily been gaining traction in the VW enthusiast realm as the GTI to have if you want a little bit more size and comfort to go with your hot hatch formula. However, it’s hard to find a MkII that hasn’t been tinkered with. Two decades have passed since the last one left the showrooms and with that comes a spate of modifications that run from VR6 engine swaps to ones with slammed suspensions, appealing to the stance crowd. But, every now and then, a true unmolested MkII will surface like this one for sale in North Carolina. This is a higher mileage car, but has been given the attention it deserves.

While it’s not the more desirable GTI 16V, there’s a lot to like about this MkII. The MkIII and MkIV generations added on pounds and size, so for those wanting one of the last originals, a MkII of any sort will suffice nicely. It’s not hard to tell this car has been adult owned, as it shows. It’s condition is impressive for the mileage. It would be a shame if a boy racer gets their hands on it though, as this is one particular car that should be preserved as it sits. If it is as good as it looks, $5,600 isn’t too bad a deal for such a mint MkII. Given the distance on the chassis, however, some bargaining may be in order and it’s nice to see the seller is open to offers. Ready for a nostalgia trip back to the 1980s? This is a good car to do it in.
