Students will travel internationally to perform service.
Lakewood, N.J., July 7, 2015—Georgian Court University has been awarded a $20,000 grant from NetVUE, the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education, to support a new peer ministry mentor program and an international Mercy service trip.
The grant program will strengthen GCU’s campus chaplaincy and provide opportunities for students to further integrate mercy and service into their vocations.
“The foundation of Georgian Court University’s mission is a commitment to mercy,” said Evelyn Saul Quinn ’74, Vice President of Mission Integration. “This grant initiative is an exciting opportunity for us to expand our chaplaincy program and continue inspiring students to answer the call to mercy, both on campus and abroad. The peer ministry mentors and service trip will help students see their faith as a call to action, not just in their local communities, but as global citizens and broaden their understanding of the need for mercy far beyond their homes.”
Peer ministers will be trained to lead faith-sharing communities within the university’s four residence halls. The mentors will lead and host student events throughout the year, including Gospel readings and discussions, spiritual reflections, and retreats to inspire and encourage students to connect GCU’s mercy mission to their daily lives.
Learning through service
In addition, GCU students will travel to a Mercy-sponsored ministry in Jamaica for an intensive experience of service and social justice. Upon their return, the students will work to energize the GCU student body for service and advocacy.
“Georgian Court is grateful to NetVUE for providing these opportunities for our students to reflect on the importance of mercy, service, and social justice in their lives and integrate these values in their chosen vocations,” Quinn said. “Our goal is to continue developing passionate leaders with a sense of mission and service.”
