In 2006, Rebecca Kastl, atransgendered former adjunct faculty member at Estrella Mountain Community College, lost a sex discrimination suit challenging the nonrenewal of her teaching contract and a requirement that she use the men’s restrooms. A federal judge in Phoenix rejected claims that the Maricopa County Community College District, of which Estrella Mountain is a part, violated Rebecca Kastl’s rights. The Ninth Circuit affirmed the decision in 2009.
