This weekend in Birmingham, is the annual tradition featuring our pets and animals, plus plenty of music and fun!  Do Dah Day takes place at Caldwell and Rhodes parks in the Highland Avenue area of Birmingham.  The weekend begins on Friday May 16th with the Do Dah Eve at Black Market Bar & Grill located at 2011 Highland Avenue South in Birmingham. That event will feature the Human King & Queen crowning.  The event will also have lots of fun planned with prizes, music, and much more.

On Saturday May 17th, the day gets started with the Do Dah Day Parade that starts at 11:01 am.  Registration starts at 9 am and the parade will begin at the corner of Highland Avenue and 33rd Street South.  The parade will travel down Highland Avenue and will feature floats, bands, dancers, cars, and plenty of pets, some in costume!  After the parade is over, there will be tons of things to do for the entire family, and best of all, admission is free!  For the kids, there will be face painting, hair weaving, arts and crafts, sports, bungee jumping, and activities from the McWane Science Center.

For the adults, there will be food and beverage vendors, vendor booths, booths featuring pet information and pet services, and more!  One of the best parts of Do Dah Day is the music, and there are plenty of great acts performing at Do Dah Day 2014 beginning at 11:30 am.  At Rhodes Park; Hearts, Chelsea Whild, Ocean Liner, Elliott Davis, and Shannon Labrie will perform.  At Caldwell Park; Iron Giant Percussion, Roots Posse, The Paybacks, Rollin In The Hay, The Turn, and The Wind and the Wave will perform.  To learn more about the bands, go to: http://www.dodahday.org/bands

This year, there are a few new things to expect at Do Dah Day 2014.  First, there will be a blessing of the animals at 2 pm at Caldwell Park.  Also, there will be a JOY Tree at Caldwell Park.  For a $5 donation, you will receive a JOY Tree card to attach to flowers on the trees.  The JOY Tree is an annual honorarium/memoriam in Caldwell Park – located by the trees near the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and the base of the steps.  It is a place where people can honor other people and pets who have impacted their lives.  It is named after Jerry O. Yarley.  This year’s tree is named in honor of Emily Sturrock by her friends who are also friends of Do Dah Day.  Learn more about the JOY tree at:  http://dodahday.org/joy-tree.php

A few things to remember, bring poop bags if you are bringing your pet.  Make sure your pet’s costume is comfortable.  Keep your pets on a leash at all times!  Keep you and your pets hydrated.  And if your pets are too aggressive or unpredictable, leave them at home!  Have fun at Birmingham’s oldest event, and spend the day enjoying the music, vendors, and lots and lots of pets.  You will see more than dogs and cats at Do Dah Day.  People have brought out snakes, birds, goats, horses, turtles, and other animals!  All funds raised at Do Dah Day goes to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and Friends of Cats and Dogs Foundation.  And Do Dah Day is a 100% volunteer organization.  People fly in from other parts of the country to volunteer for this special day!  The fun begins at 11:01 am on Saturday May 17th!  To learn more about Do Dah Day, go to: http://www.dodahday.org
