Lately, as I introduce my children to music beyond our preschool playlist, I am rediscovering the power of songs. I worked in the music industry for over 15 years and after being away for 4, I’m now remembering why I was once so passionate about helping artists get their message to the masses. The right song can completely change my mood, my attitude and my life. . .on any given day. While I have nothing against fun, secular songs {unlike my parents’ generation who wouldn’t allow us kids to listen to the “devil’s music}, I believe a positive, life-giving song that touches the hearts of my kids can make a huge impact in their lives.

So although we’ll sometimes take a break and rock out to a little Katy Perry or Ellie Goulding, for the most part, these are the songs we’ve got on repeat in my car.

1. Live Like You’re Loved – Hawk Nelson

I cannot stop listening to this song. Can.not.stop. It’s the message I need most and it’s one I want my kids to get early on. The title says it all. The entire new album from Hawk Nelson is amazing. Diamonds is full of bright, fun songs that speak truth over the listener’s life. My daughter {6} wants the title track on repeat at all times while my son {3} loves “Sold Out” which he affectionately calls, “the secret agent song” because. . .well, it’s opening sounds like it belongs in a Mission: Impossible movie. This album is the perfect family road trip soundtrack.

2. Gold – Britt Nicole

Every song on Britt Nicole’s Gold album will appeal to girls and many to boys as well. Another lyric that speaks right to the heart of identity, this song is definitely a favorite.

3. Love Take Me Over – Steven Curtis Chapman

This song has long been our morning car pool lane anthem. I can’t think of a better way to send kids off into the world than by first asking for love to take over their entire being.

4. Mess Like Me – Lindsay McCaul

When asked, “what one artist would you want to sing a duet with?” my daughter immediately answered, Lindsay McCaul. Although Lindsay’s album is geared more towards older listeners with her thought-provoking songwriting and beautiful melodies, my girl loves Lindsay. This one is a favorite because it reminds us that he covers our crazy with his amazing love.

5. Live Like That – Sidewalk Prophets

Another powerful life-anthem that reminds us how we want to live our lives for Jesus.

6. Beautiful Day – Jamie Grace

I love the heart of gratitude that is expressed through this song. It’s an attitude I want for my kids to grab hold of and this song is a great reminder to enjoy the beautiful world we live in.

7. He Knows My Name – Francesca Battistelli

A driving reminder that he knows us and that is enough.

8. Speak Life - Toby Mac

Oh the power that lies in our words. This is a lesson I learn over and over again and want my kids to understand now so they develop good habits with the words of their mouth.

9. Live it Up – Group 1 Crew

This was our family’s very first dance party song. My kiddos have been livin’ it up with this song for a few years now. Blast it on a Friday and welcome the weekend together. We like to use our Party Starter {blue tooth speaker and light show} to kick the party up a notch.

10. He Knows – Jeremy Camp

Another powerful song about being known by the Father. Jeremy Camp’s new album, I Will Follow starts off with 5 songs that offer a fresh sound for this veteran artist. At first listen, I almost didn’t recognize him. This new sound makes Jeremy’s music much more accessible for younger audiences while the second half of the album is classic, solid Jeremy Camp. Together the record has something for everyone!

I know it’s only a matter of years before my kids won’t touch music I suggest or like myself. While I have their attention, I hope to cover them with as much life-giving words as I can.

What are some of your favorite positive songs? Do you listen to music as a family? Who are your favorite artists?
