New Britain, CT, United States (4E) – New Britain police arrested a suspected gunman at the Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) Monday afternoon ending nearly three hours of lockdown by the school.
The suspect in orange shirt and camouflage pants was led away in handcuffs around 2:30 p.m. and the lockdown was lifted around 3:15 p.m. Police said the suspect was boxed into a dorm room before being taken into custody.
No shot was fired and no one was injured in the incident that started when the campus emergency alert sounded at12:30 p.m. telling students to shelter in place. Successive CCSU alerts followed via Twitter warning that a man carrying a gun was seen on campus.
Police officers and SWAT teams arrived at the CCSU and started searching the campus past 1 p.m.. Police also closed roads around the campus and classes were cancelled for the whole day.
Nicholas Federici, a student and former police officer, said he saw a man with a sword and a handgun walking toward James Hall, a coed residence hall near the center of the campus, and called the police around 2 p.m., according to the Hartford Courant. Federici described the man as wearing a green Army fatigues, black knee pads and a mask. He also had a backpack.
The man was found and arrested later.
Students said the suspect was a senior student and his outfit and weapon were the costume he used for a Halloween party he attended Thursday night.
