Uncanny Avengers 2.0.
By Joshua YehlWe all want the best of the best, so let us point out the hottest comics and collectibles released each week. We spotlight our favorite comics that we know are money-well-spent, new books that look cool, and any toys we can't wait to play with.
Check out our picks, then take to the comments to let us know what looks good to you!
Batman #38 - $3.99
Written by Scott Snyder & Drawn by Greg Capullo | DC Comics
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman run has been a must-read comic book since its debut, but usually we avoid recommending every issue in order to feature other worthy book. But not this time. Endgame is so off the hook that we need to make sure everyone is reading it!
The twists in the previous issue added a new wrinkle to the Joker’s character that’s had our heads spinning with wild theories. How could that be possible? Is the Joker just a man, or something more? Tune into chapter four of Endgame to find out with us.
Gotham By Midnight #3 - $2.99
Written by Ray Fawkes & Drawn by Ben Templesmith
Gotham By Midnight is the breakout hit of the recent batch of new Bat-comics to hit the market. It features Jim Corrigan (aka the Spectre) and a team of supernatural investigators solving occult mysteries in Gotham City.
It has a chilling tone and sharp writing, but the element that pushes this book to the next level is Ben Templesmith’s art. Scratchy, stylistic, and colored in bleak tones, it creates the dark atmosphere in which all the magical mysteries unfold. It’s rare that we get a comic from DC that breaks from the mold this much to tell a moody, sinister story that keeps you up at night, so support this one to make sure it lasts.
Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus HC, Vol. 1 - $125.00
Written by Geoff Johns and Various & Drawn by Ethan Van Sciver and Various
We are jazzed to shine a bright light on the first of several Green Lantern omnibuses featuring Geoff Johns’ epic saga. It features Green Lantern Hal Jordan operating as a superhero on Earth before launching into the Sinestro Corps War aka the Empire Strikes Back of the comics world. It collects Green Lantern #1-25 and all of the Sinestro Corps War tie-ins.
Top 10 Moments from Geoff Johns' Green Lantern Run
What can we say about this run that hasn’t already been said? It’s an instant classic that catapulted Green Lantern to new levels of popularity, making him a comics franchise second only to Batman. If you’ve never given Green Lantern a try, then this is your chance to see what all the hype is about. Or if you’re a fan of the run and want to once again enjoy what is now a modern day classic, then you can’t do better than this omnibus.
The Dying and the Dead #1 - $4.50
Written by Jonathan Hickman & Drawn by Ryan Bodenheim | Image Comics
Jonathan Hickman’s name is synonymous with long-term storytelling, out-there ideas, and epic pay-offs. With the end of his Avengers saga mere months away, he’s launching another comic series at Image. It’s being promoted as “high adventure meets end-of-life care” or in other words “It's Indiana Jones for Old People. There are no fedoras, only bedpans.” -- which just makes us smile. Hickman is one of the big thinkers in comics, and we’re stoked to see what he’s come up with this time.
Sex Criminals #10 - $3.50
Written by Matt Fraction & Chip Zdarsky | Image Comics
One of our favorite comics is back with another issue. With last chapter’s big emotional ending, we’ve been all hot and bothered wondering what’s going to happen next. Writer Matt Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky are a match made in pervert heaven, charming us with their quirky and painfully real characters while making us laugh at their sexual depravity and brimping references (whatever that means).
Uncanny Avengers #1 - $3.99
Written by Rick Remender & Drawn by Daniel Acuna
The relaunch of Uncanny Avengers is by far Marvel’s biggest release of the week. We’re not exactly convinced that this series needed a relaunch, but either way we are stoked to see Rick Remender re-teaming with Daniel Acuna to continue their epic Avengers/X-Men story.
Spoilers for Axis!
The big question coming out of Axis concerns Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch’s true origins. If Magneto isn’t their father, then who is? Are they still mutants, or will corporate synergy have them be revealed as Inhumans? We didn’t enjoy Axis much, but we can forgive it if an exciting new story comes out of it.
What Did Marvel Just Do to Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver?
IGN Conversations
Even without that drama, seeing this markedly different team -- veteran members Scarlet Witch and Rogue now joined by Brother Voodoo, The Vision, Captain Falcon, Quicksilver, and Sabretooth with a good conscience -- pick up where the Unity Squad left off is enough to garner interest. Uncanny Avengers has consistently been one Marvel’s best comics, and we fully expect that to continue with this relaunched series.
The Phantom #1 - $3.99
Written by Brian Clevinger & Drawn by Brent Schoonover | Dynamite Entertainment
Dynamite is launching a mini-series for two retro characters this week (the other being Flash Gordon), but this one caught our attention because of comedic comic writer Brian Clevinger, who you might know from his Atomic Robo series.
The Phantom being a crime-fighting hero with a skeleton motif, we weren’t expecting him to be written with a humorous flair. Either Clevinger is showing us his talent for drama, or we’ll be getting a more light-hearted Phantom than ever before. Either way, we’re pumped to check it out.
Star-Lord Mini-Bust - $85.00
By Gentle Giant Studios
With the Guardians of the Galaxy reaching insane levels of popularity thanks to the movie, it stands to reason that they get some sweet collectibles. What surprised us about this Star-Lord mini-bust is that it’s based off the DnA comic run instead of the new movie design. Not that we’re complaining! From the cool helmet-mask to the Guardians uniform, his character design is sickeningly awesome. We only hope we get busts of similar quality for the rest of the Guardians from the comics.
