I’ll admit, I was somewhat wrong about LEGO Dimensions when it first came out, and inclusion of Adventure Time in the second season of the game is exactly why. Initially, I wasn’t keen on the idea of replacing the great single-franchse adventures with a hybrid model. But I was wrong, because LEGO Dimensions enables us to play awesome franchises that wouldn’t be able to carry their own complete LEGO game. Which brings us to the Adventure Time Level Pack.
The first wave of LEGO Dimension’s second year brings fans not one, but two, Adventure Time packs. The first is a Level Pack features a Finn minifigure, along with the Jakemobile and an Ancient War Elephant who can be rebuilt in different ways in a unique new adventure. Second, a Team Pack completes the set with Jake and Lumpy Space Princess minifigures along with a buildable BMO and Lumpy Car. You can have fun with either set in the game, but if you’re only going to choose one, go with the Level Pack for all the extra content it provides. But lets be honest, if you’re a true fan though, you’re probably getting both.
Not only is Adventure Time’s tone and humour a perfect match for the LEGO games, but the characters look in the game and as LEGO minifigures. If nothing else for Adventure Time fans, these packs are worth getting for the toys alone. Because lets be honest, it’s unlikely that LEGO will ever produce a whole line of Adventure Time sets (there is an upcoming LEGO Ideas Adventure Time set, but it’s not quite the same.). But then, you’d be missing out on the real fun: a brand new Adventure Time adventure.
That’s what you get for picking up the LEGO Adventure Time Level pack, a whole new story featuring Jake, Finn, Princess Bubblegum, and friends, featuring voice work from the cartoon’s cast. Since this is LEGO Dimensions, you can also have any of your other figures join in, so if you want Superman or Doc Brown to explore alongside Finn, you can! However, if you want to have Finn and Jake together (and not just Jake-as-vehicle), you will have to buy the Team Pack. That’s great for business, but not necessarily great for Adventure Time fans.
What I liked most though is that while LEGO Dimensions levels have a had a consistent, realistic-ish look (for LEGO anyway), the Adventure Time worlds follow the example set by Scooby-Doo last year, featuring a distinctly animated look that really makes you feel like you are playing within the cartoon itself. That’s what LEGO Dimensions is supposed to be able to do: give players a unique experience for each property while mashing them all together. Clearly, that shines through with the Adventure Time Level Pack.
CAN FAMILIES PLAY?
Obviously, anything LEGO is great for gamers of all ages, and there’s no exception here with Adventure Time. Not only is a great addition to LEGO Dimensions, but it’s a great TV show as well, one that families can definitely enjoy together. Cost is always going to be a factor with LEGO Dimensions, and this set is certainly not cheap. That said, if you are a LEGO Dimensions family, you’ve already crossed that bridge long ago.
THE GAMERPOPS RECOMMENDATION
If you are an Adventure Time fan, this might just be your only chance to have LEGO minifig versions of Finn and Jake. That alone might be enough of a reason to pick up these LEGO Dimensions packs. But what they offer as part of LEGO Dimensions season 2 is a fun, silly adventure that perfectly blends Adventure Time with the LEGO Dimensions universe.
