Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway’s TDs and Senators need to rally together to fight for a new hospital for Galway.

That’s according to Galway West/South Mayo Independent Deputy Catherine Connolly.

Health Minister Simon Harris says a new hospital is not on the cards – despite a statement by hospital management that UHG is no longer fit for purpose.

Deputy Catherine Connolly says expansion at the existing UHG site is simply short-term ‘fire-fighting exercises’.

She says a long-term plan is needed and a new hospital is the only solution.

The Health Minister is to meet with the Saolta Hospitals group in the coming months to discuss any concerns it has regarding acute hospitals across the west.

Deputy Connolly says she hopes HSE management can stress the need for a new hospital for Galway.

She says Independents in particular need to ‘band together’ to force change.
