Monroes

Thursday, May 29, 9pm: Bréag -Main Stage, Show Time ~ 10pm. Celebrating 20 years together this year, Bréag, who were formed initially to raise money for local Irish language schools, have become one of the most refined and original of acts their kind. Over the last decade, they’ve performed as far a field as Sri Lanka, and developed a Celtic fusion never before heard. The first generation of urban Gaelic speakers in modern Belfast, their Gaelic heritage permeates through their lyrics and music. With Eastern European and Latin American traditional styles, branched with roots of Reggae and Ska, Bréag give the listener, and inevitably the dancer, a unique musical experience. Bréag have performed throughout Ireland, Europe and Asia, and have returned to the Basque country and Switzerland on numerous occasions. Bréag have twice shared a stage with the infamous Jamaican reggae outfit The Wailers, as well as Shane Mc Gowan, Sly & Robbie, Bad Manners, Steel Pulse, The Beat, Mano Negra, Neville Staple, Alabama 3, Lee Thompson, The Rubberbandits,The Hothouse Flowers, Black 47, John Spillane, and Kila. Bréag have released three albums first in 1995 with Jah Sa Jungal under their own label Comhcheoil. Not long after its release, Bréag were approached by Outlet Records and consequently recorded their second album Gan Jah. Bréag’s latest album, An Peaca, mastered by Robyn Robins, former member of Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, was released in 2004. Performing on this recording is ex-Wailers keyboardist, Nathaniel Wynters aka Natty Wailer.

Thursday, May 29: Busquitos -BackStage Bar, Show Time ~ 11.30pm, Admission – €5. Very funny entertaining Jazzy Jivin’ Band with brilliant instrumentalists and Hoarse Vocals.

Friday, May 30, 8:30pm: Amanda Shires with support from Arctic Tern. Admission – €12.50//€10 online. BackStage Bar, Show Time ~ 9pm. Amanda Shires is someone you simply can’t ignore and she’s back in Ireland 2014 to support her extraordinary new album “Down Fell The Doves”. She supported and accompanied husband, Jason Isbell, during his Dublin appearance late last year and now the Texas “Artist of the Year in 2011 is returning for a series of headline dates across the country. Just in case the title alone wasn’t a dead give away, “Down Fell the Doves” is not a record for the faint of heart, faith or spirit. Not that anyone who heard her previous album would have expected such. “Carrying Lightning”, the critically acclaimed 2011 breakthrough that put Shires on the map as one of Americana music’s most arresting new voices (and Texas Music magazine’s 2011 Artist of the Year), was a tangled web of frayed heartstrings and combustible desire that revealed the one-time “little fiddle player from Lubbock” to be a grown woman unafraid to “get wrecked in love” and dish out the same with keen poetic insight and unnervingly mature, femme-fatale conviction. But as striking as Lightning was, “Down Fell the Doves” (Shires’ debut for Lightning Rod Records) is where the gloves really come off.

Friday, May 30: Hot Fuss – Main Stage, Show Time ~ Midnight. Admission – €10. Modern songs from Mumford & Sons, Kings of Leon, MGMT to classics such as Oasis and Bob Marley

Held on the last Friday of every month in Monroe’s Live, Dominick Street, The Last Friday Club is an all-dancing celebration of pop music and an antidote to modern day clubbing fatigue. The music played at Last Friday Club takes in the full breadth of the pop spectrum, from 70s to now, with much loved classics, forgotten gems and straight up dance floor crackers – it’s an all-out party, so there’s no holding back! Event organiser Emer Hennelly, Monroe’s Live and DJ Jon Richards are united in their passion for pop and celebrate it in full euphoric effect; free from irony and cynicism; for the biggest, boldest and most ridiculously fun night out of your life.
