Know The Topmost Patriotic Films on this 66th Indian Independence Day!



Cinema is one form of entertainment which is loved by all. The Bollywood industry releases umpteen number of movies of different genre every year and one such genre concentrated in the films is the feeling of patriotism. The feeling which says come what may at the end of the end ‘I am an Indian and that also a Proud one’. So this 66th Indian Independence Day we at Fuze thought why not give our readers some known unknown insight about the films based on the theme of Independence and Patriotism.

I. Freedom Based Indian Movies -

a) Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi - Gandhi is a biographical film which came in the year 1982. It was the biography of India’s Father of Nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The film was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough. It was made under the collaboration of Indian and British production companies. The film showcases Gandhi’s life till his assassination in the year 1948. On 30 November 1982 the film released in India, in United Kingdom the movie released on 3 December and in the United States on 6 December in the same year as it released in India. The movie was nominated in 11 eleven categories in the Academy Awards, it won eight of them, including the award for the Best Picture. Richard Attenborough won the Best Director and Ben Kingsley won the Best Actor.

b) Sardar – Sardar is a film which released in the year 1993, it was a biopic on one of the most brave freedom fighters of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The film was directed by Ketan Mehta and was written by Vijay Tendulkar. Paresh Rawal played the character of Sardar Patel while Anu Kapoor essayed the character of Mahatma Gandhi. The film concentrated on the freedom struggle of Indian through various phases and what followed after. Benjamin Gilani played Jawaharlal Nehru in the film.

 

c) Bhagat Singh – There is more than just one film on Bhagat Singh. He is a freedom fighter and one of the most brave sons of the Indian soil. The Bollywood arena has paid its tribute to this martyr more than than once in the way of films. Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed-E-Azam, 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, The Legend of Bhagat Singh are some of films on the legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. From Shammi Kapoor, to Manoj Kumar, to Ajay Devgan, different actors have essayed the role of Bhagat Singh. The films pay tribute to the freedom fighter and instill the spirit of Patriotism.

d) Bose: The forgotten hero – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero; as the name itself suggests, the movie is about freedom fighter, Subhas Chandra Bose. The film released in the year 2004, it was directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Raj Pius, Barbara von Wrangell. Actors Sachin Khedekar, Divya Dutta, Rajit Kapur, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Arif Zakaria were a part of the film. Actor Sachin Khedekar essayed the character of Subhas Chandra Bose.

e) Mangal Pandey – The Indian title for the film was Mangal Pandey: The Rising, the international title of the film was The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey. The film had perfectionist Aamir Khan essaying the lead character of Mangal Pandey. The film released on 12th August 2005. Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier. He is known for his contribution and role in Indian Mutiny in the year 1857. The film was directed by Ketan Mehta and was produced by Bobby Bedi. Mangal Pandey was a soldier whose actions helped to motivate the Indian rebellion in 1857; “The First War of Indian Independence”.

II. Socio-Political Indian Movies -

a) Mother India - Mother India hit the cinema screens in the year 1957. Nargis Dutt, Raj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar were seen in pivotal roles in the film. The film depicted the struggles of a women who wants to give her son a good life in the absence of her husband. Radha, the character essayed by Nargis in the end kills her son Birju, who has turned bad, she kills him for the greater good. The film is women-centric and showcases the goodness and courage of women. The film was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan and it was written by Mehboob Khan, Wajahat Mirza and S. Ali Raza.

b) Purab aur Paschim - Purab aur Paschim, the words which means East or West, is a film which saw the light in the year 1970. The film was produced and directed by Manoj Kumar. Manoj Kumar, Saira Banu, Ashok Kumar, Pran and Prem Chopra were seen in pivotal roles in the feature film. The film is on the lines when East meets West. Purab aur Paschim has some wonderful music by the musical mastero Kalyanji-Anandji.

c) Karma -Karma, the film which stars the legendary actor Dilip Kumar in the lead role, is the story of a jailer who slaps a terrorist Dr. Dang. Vishwa Pratap Singh’s (Dilip Kumar) life changes and his family is killed. Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah who play prisoners in the film are trained by Vishwa Pratap Singh (Dilip Kumar) to avenge against a dangerous criminal like Dr. Dang, who is a threat to the country. Anupam Kher, Srider, Nutan, Poonam Dhillon, Dara Singh are all a part of the cast. The film released in 1986 and was directed and Produced by Subhash Ghai.

d) Roja – In 1992, a film titled Roja directed by Mani Ratnam came to light, the film was later dubbed in Telugu, Hindi, Marathi and Malayalam and the film was originally in Tamil. The film is about a couple who are in the valley of Kashmir for their Honeymoon. Life takes a drastic turn and the guy is kidnapped and held captive by the terrorists. The story of Roja is about Roja’s struggle to get back her husband safe and alive. The film stars Arvind Swamy, Madhubala, Naseer in prominent roles. The film has won three National Film Awards, one of them was awarded for Best Film on National Integration.

e) Maachis – Maachis the film which came in the year 1996 and was produced by R. V. Pandit and was directed by Gulzar. The film starred actors like Chandrachur Singh, Om Puri, Jimmy Shergill and Tabu in the lead roles. The movie showcases the situations of the 1980′s revolving around the rise of the Sikh insurgency in Punjab. The song from the film ‘Chappa Chappa Charka Chale’ is among the most popular and remembered songs till date. The name Maachis represents the young generation who like a matchstick can be influenced and also be the change.

f) Dil Se - Dil se the film which stars Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and also marked the debut of Preity Zinta in Bollywood, this film came out in the year 1998. It was directed by Mani Ratnam and was produced by Bharat Shah, Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma and Shekhar Kapur. The film yet again like some of the ace director Mani Ratnam’s earlier films showcased the human connect and surrounded the web of politics and terror lingering around the corner. The film revolved around Meghna essayed by Manisha Koiraila being a part of a terrorist group. The film goes on to talk about love and bond. The film ends with Amar (Shah Rukh Khan) and Meghna realizing their love and dying in the end. The film’s musical score by A. R. Rahman is immensely popular.

g) Sarfarosh - The movie came out in the year 1999, it was written, directed and produced by John Matthew Matthan. Aamir Khan and Sonali Bendre played the lead characters in the film. Sarfarosh revolved around an officer trying to curb cross-border terrorism and also fighting the bad elements with in the country. The film had Naseeruddin Shah essaying a pivotal role. With Aamir Khan essaying the character of ACP Ajay Singh Rathod, Sarfarosh was all about Ajay and his team of men, officers, fighting against the wrong elements within and outside the Nation. The movie won the best film critics award at the Filmfare awards.

h) Gadar – The title of the film being Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, as the name itself suggest the movie is a love story revolved around the characters of Tara Singh, a Jatt Sikh from India and Sakina a Muslim girl from Pakistan. The characters of Tara Singh and Sakina was essayed by Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel. The film released in the year 2001. It was written by Shaktiman Talwar, directed by Anil Sharma and was produced by Nitin Keni. The story revolves around a Indo-Pakistan love story and their struggle and fight to be together against all odds. Amrish Puri and Lilette Dubey are also a part of the film.

i) Rang De Basanti –  Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti, awakens the spirit of doing something for your country. The film is about a group of friends who loose their beloved friend, an Air Officer. The movie is about fight against corruption. On the other hand the film also shows each character in relevance to the characters of the freedom struggle, Bhagat Singh and his comrades. The music for the song was given by the musical maestro A.R. Rehman. The film was produced by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Ronnie Screwvala and Aamir Khan. The film released on 26th January, Indian Republic Day in the year 2006. Actors Aamir Khan, Siddharth Narayan, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Waheeda Rehman, R. Madhavan, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Alice Patten, Anupam Kher, Kiran Kher played prominent characters in the film.

j) Aamir – Aamir means ‘Leader’,the film released on June 6th 2008. The movie marked the debut of the then television heartthrob Rajeev Khandelwal, who essayed the character of Aamir Ali, a doctor who returns to India after a long time. The film was produced by Ronnie Screwvala, directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and was distributed by UTV Motion Pictures. The film revolved around the character of Aamir; whose family has been held captive by extremist who in-return of the safety of Aamir Ali’s family want Aamir to plant a bomb in a bus. Aamir who is torn between the love for his family and the lives of the innocent in the end, ends-up giving up his life and saving innocent lives which goes unacknowledged, yet he becomes a true leader leading from the front. The film won rave critic reviews and Rajeev Khandelwal with Aamir made it clear to the Bollywood and Television fraternity that he is here to stay.

k) A Wednesday - As the title of the film suggests, the film A Wednesday; is about a Wednesday set in a particular time frame. The movie starred immensely talented actors Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles. Actors Jimmy Shergill , Deepal Shaw and Aamir Bashir were also a part of the cast. The film hit the theatres on September 5th 2008. The film was directed by Neeraj Pandey and was produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Shital Bhatia and Anjum Rizvi. The film is a narration of old records by a Police Commissioner who is all set to retire, Prakash Rathod (Anupam Kher) who talks about the happenings of a day , a Wednesday, when a common man of India showed the Nation the shortcomings and faulty state of our Political and Security system. The film intrigued the critics and the cinema-buffs and was entertaining till the very end.

III. War Based Indian Movies -

a) Border - Irrespective of an Indian living anywhere round the Globe whenever they hear the word ‘Border’ their thoughts travel towards the Indian brave-heart soldiers. The Indian soldiers who away from their home, families, leaving behind their troubles serve the Nation. The film revolves around the duty towards the Nation which is bigger than anything calling and the belief that they will win the dangers of war. Border came in the year 1997 and was a J. P. Dutta’s film. It revolved around the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. The film starred actors Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Raakhee, Jackie Shroff, Tabbu, Pooja Bhatt, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Puneet Issar among others. The film is an adaptation from real life happenings that occurred at the Battle of Longewala that was fought in Rajasthan during the time of Bangladesh Liberation War and Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The film has won National, Filmfare and Screen Awards accolades in different categories.

b) LOC KARGIL - LOC Kargil is yet again a film by J. P. Dutta, the film was produced, directed and written by J. P. Dutta. It was once again a war based film. The film released in the year 2003 and just as the name suggests, the film revolved around the India-Pakistan Kargil war 1999 around the LOC; Line Of Control. The film had a number of Bollywood actors being a part and making appearance in the film. The film received a mixed response both commercially and critically. The film’s run time goes a little over four hours and is surely one of the longest made Indian film. Actors Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Saif Ali Khan, Sunil Shetty, Sanjay Kapoor, Puru Raajkumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Mohnish Bahl, Akshaye Khanna, Manoj Bajpai, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor, Esha Deol, Raveena Tandon, Bikram Saluja, Ashutosh Rana, Amar Upadhyay, Kiran Kumar, Sudesh Berry, Raj Babbar were a part of the film.

c) Lakshya - Lakshya the word which means Target, Goal; was the film which hit the theatres in the year of 2004 on 18th June. The film was directed by the actor, director, producer Farhan Akhtar and the movie was produced by Ritesh Sidhwani. The film starred actors Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Sharad Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan,Aditya Srivastava, Sushant Singh, Om Puri, Boman Irani. The film is fiction based on the backdrop and basis of the 1999 Kargil conflict war. Prabhu Deva got National Film Award for the best choreography; for the song ‘Main Aisa Kyun Hoon’. It also won Filmfare Awards for best cinematographer by Christopher Popp and best choreography, Prabhu Deva. The song ‘Lakshya Tho Harr Haal Mein Paana Hai’ instills the feeling of patriotism in every Indian.

IV. Sports Based Indian Movies -

a) Lagaan – Lagaan which means Land Tax; was the film that released in the year 2001. The film starred the perfectionist Aamir Khan and the then newcomer Gracy Singh. The film revolved around the game of Cricket against the ruling British Empire and the struggle of the farmers. The film is based on true events, it depicts the happenings in 1893 in a village named Champaner during the British rule in India. The film is against the taxes imposed and burdened on the peasants and village people for barren land. The film is about a Cricket match between the  and the British officers. As a wager for taxes a match is to be played and if the common village people team win against the British, the taxes is waived off. It was nominated for the Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.

b) Chak De India – Chak De India, had the Badshaah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan essaying the role of Kabir Khan, the coach of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. The film was produced by Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra and was directed by Shimit Amin. The movie was all about Hockey and the love one has for our Indian National Game. The movie was a fictional one. Vidya Malvade, Anaitha Nair, Tanya Abrol, Shilpa Shukla, Arya Menon, Shubhi Mehta, Chitrashi Rawat, Kimi Laldawla, Masochon Zimik, Sandia Furtado, Nichola Sequeira, Sagarika Ghatge, Kimberly Miranda, Seema Azmi, Raynia Mascerhanas, Nisha Nair, Anjan Srivastav, Vivan Bhatena, were a part of the film. The film won accolades including the National Film Award.

c) Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the recent addition to sports based Indian films. The film is a biographical based on the life of Milkha Singh, the Indian Athlete also known as the ‘Flying Sikh’. The film hit the theatres very recently in the month of July. The film is produced by Viacom 18 and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and it is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The film stars Farhan Akhtar essaying the character of Milkha. The film has done exceptionally well at the box-office in India and overseas. The film also stars Sonam Kapoor, Meesha Shafi, Dev Gill, Prakash Raj, Pawan Malhotra, Dalip Tahil, Rebecca Breeds. The film is written by Prasoon Joshi. The music for the film is given by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The movie has and is continuing to do well commercially and has also received critical acclaim.
