When you get new kittens, you are in for a world of cuteness!  My girls had been
asking
begging for kittens for awhile and we decided that now was the perfect time.  While I have nothing against dogs, there’s something about cats that bring out the animal lover in me.  I’m not sure who was more excited about the kittens, my girls or me!  There’s nothing more fun than being in a room full of playful kittens while try to decide which ones to adopt.  Finally, each of my girls chose a favorite…meet Amelia and Sugar:

It was love at first sight!  Not only do the girls have pets to love, it also teaches them about responsibility.  They’ve taken charge of the food and the water and pay attention to when the kittens need a refill.  It’s also funny how each girls picked out a cat that has the opposite personality of theirs.  Keira, my little one, is outgoing, social and a little bit on the mischievous side.  Her kitty is more mellow and relaxed.  Ashling, my more introverted daughter, picked the super playful kitten that bounces off the walls at every turn.  These are matches made in heaven!

It looks like our kittens have settled in and made themselves at home.  They’ve found some new hiding places…

and learned to enjoy long walks with Keira.

We’ve also finally found a use for that old Easter basket, thanks to Sugar.

When they’re worn out from chasing each others tails, they head to their new favorite napping spot by the window.

We love our new kitties but before we could bring them home, we had to be ready.  We took a trip to Walmart and stocked up on all the supplies we’d need.  If you’re planning to get a kitten anytime soon, these are the things you’ll want to have ahead of time…

Bringing an adorable new kitten home? You'll need these things on hand first.

Cat Food

First and foremost, kittens need food!  Since we want nothing but the best for our newest family members, I made sure we had plenty of SHEBA® PERFECT PORTIONS™ on hand.  I like that they come in perfect portion sizes so we wouldn’t have to worry about overfeeding our kitties.  They also come in a variety of flavors such as SHEBA® PERFECT PORTIONS™ Paté In Natural Juices Savory Chicken Entrée, SHEBA® PERFECT PORTIONS™ Cuts In Gravy Signature Tuna Entrée and SHEBA® PERFECT PORTIONS™ Paté In Natural Juices Roasted Turkey Entrée.  You can even try one of several variety packs to see which flavor kitty likes best and they were all super easy to find in the cat food aisle at Walmart.  In fact, we found pretty much everything we needed for our new cats at Walmart.

Our kitties aren’t meant for a boring cat food…they deserve nothing but the best!   I’d say they wholeheartedly agree! SHEBA® WHAT CATS WANT™

Cat Treats

Everybody loves a yummy treat and cats are no exception.  Our kittens love these SHEBA® Meaty Tender Sticks with Chicken and are always carrying them around the house when they’re not snacking on them.  I like that they’re made with real meat and no artificial flavors and I think my cats love that they’re a fun, stick-shaped snack so they can both snack AND bat them around the house.

Food & Water Bowls

Of course, you’ll also need some cute food and water bowls.  Since our kitties are so adorable, shouldn’t they have adorable bowls to eat and drink out of?

Litter Box

While this isn’t quite as much fun, you’ll need a litter box too.  Years ago when my hubby and I lived in a small, one bedroom condo, we bought a litter box that looks like a cabinet.  It’s stashed away in the corner and nobody even knows the litter box is there.  If you do a little googling, you can find all sorts of clever litter box hideaways.

Litter & Scoop

Don’t forget the kitty litter and a scoop…the litter box isn’t much good if you don’t have these.

Toys

You’ll definitely need toys, though with cats they aren’t hard to come by.  You can buy mice, feathers on a stick, balls or take the budget route and give them empty boxes and crumpled up pieces of paper. They’re kind of like kids, they’ll play with pretty much anything!

Nail Clippers

When you bring home your new kittens, you’ll definitely want to clip their nails.  Those sharp claws can get caught on furniture or worse, your leg when they’re trying to jump in your lap for a snuggle.  These are easy to use and your cats won’t even know the difference.

Scratching Post

In addition to the clippers, you’ll want a scratching post.  They can be as expensive as $100 or more but I picked this up for around $7 at Walmart.  The cats took to it immediately and are slowly starting to learn that this is what they’re supposed to be scratching, not my pretty chairs.  I guess it also makes a pretty good resting spot!

Pet Carrier

This is one of those things you don’t think of until you actually need it.  How are you going to get your new pet(s) home or back and forth to the vet?  You’ll definitely want to pick up a carrier.

Collars

Our cats are indoor cats and have chips in case they were ever to escape.  However, it’s still a good idea to a collar so that if your cat ended up on the neighbor’s doorstep, they would immediately know who to call.  Many stores, including Walmart, have machines that will let you enter all your info and create a personalized tag for your pet right there in the store.

Of course, there’s lots of fun stuff you can buy to spoil your new kitten.  You may want a cat bed, catnip or a fun climbing post too.  However, I’ve found that the things on this list are the necessities that we can’t live without.  Did I leave anything off the list?  What would you add?
