Hulu often highlights movies in themed collections.

Introducing a new series on Frock Yeah: What I’m Watching! Each month, on or around the 15th, I’ll highlight the shows and films I watched in the previous month.

Last month, I watched:

The Bridge

What looks like a dead body is placed exactly on the border between El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. Since half of the body is in each jurisdiction, American and Mexican police work together to solve a murder that turns out to be just the tip of the iceberg.

I definitely recommend The Bridge, not only because the characters are so complex – and thus, life-like – but also because the show provides wonderful commentary on the stark differences in towns separated by the U.S.-Mexico border.

A Company Man

A man with a 9-to-5 finds out that it’s not as easy to leave his job as it was to start.

That was the vaguest description I could give, because I don’t want to give away anything. I liked this movie, though it wasn’t as riveting as other action movies I’ve seen. I especially appreciated the use of the color yellow in many scenes.

East Los High

An all-Latin@ teen drama takes a look into the lives of students in East Los Angeles, East Los High handles issues that matter to teenagers without being preachy or too jokey.

This show holds a special place in my heart, as someone who loves entertainment education. To be preachy for a second, I strongly believe in the transformative power of media, and I want to work to harness that power to improve people’s lives.

Frozen

Something about building snowmen and freezing whole towns.

This movie sucked. What the hell did y’all see in this? The animation was fine, I just thought that the story had plot holes and the characters acted nonsensically. That being said, Olaf was adorable!

Metropolis

Class distinctions lead to death, revolution and rebirth when a shiftless scion falls in love at first sight with a rebellious and charismatic teacher from the underworld.

This movie is weird as all hell, but has left an undeniable mark on the world. While watching this movie, I saw links to The Matrix, Janelle Monáe (Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) and The ArchAndroid), and more. I probably wouldn’t recommend this as a starter film for someone who’s never seen silent films, but if you’re interested in silent films and science fiction, check out Metropolis.

Sailor Moon Crystal

This is a reboot of the popular 1990s anime and manga, Sailor Moon.

Several people who watched and remember the original series or who read the manga have expressed some displeasure with Sailor Moon Crystal. Personally, I watched the original anime when I was pretty young, so I don’t remember enough to compare the two. Now, I’m watching the two series simultaneously. New episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal air on Hulu every other Saturday.

Surplus Princess, or The Mermaid

A mermaid who loves smartphones – they’re waterproof and there’s WiFi everywhere – falls in love with a prestigious chef who thinks she’s a tuna.

There’s only been one episode, so there isn’t much I can tell you about the story without spoiling everything that happens in the first episode. I really like this show so far because the humor is spot on (the mermaid says the chef’s got an apple bottom that she’d love to bite…LOL) and the supporting characters are interesting as well. So far, everyone’s likable, so I’m not looking forward to the inevitable love triangle/parallelogram/polygon that’ll ensue. Oh, k-dramas.
