SKYTEX Skypad Alpha2 - 7-inch Capacitive Touchscreen Tablet Android 2.3.4

Edit 4: There are now two Skypad support forums Android Tablet Zone and www dot skypadtablets dot com/. ATZ continues with performance mods and tweaks, Skypad Tablet zone is a more user based support forum focusing on ROMS, themes and support.
EDit 3 Support forum has moved to skypad-tablet-zone(dot)userboard(dot)net
EDIT 2: There is a new unofficial support forum for the Alpha 2 over on Android Tablet Zone. It does require you join. the dev over there Tipstir is doing amazing stuff including a Win 7 app that automates all the different tweaks and enhancements. He has already dramatically increased the performance speed.

EDIT: I got to test a beta version of their Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 and it is pretty nice. Being it is in beta stages it is still a work in progress but really nice to see it is not just promises and vaporware.
So this is the next level in the Skytex Alpha line. I was surprised to see a new pad so soon after the release of the original Alpha, but was not disappointing.
Skytex listened to what it's customers were saying and came up with a nice successor in the Alpha 2. Let's start with the specs. A faster Cortex A8 bundled with the Mali 400MP graphics processor. This is a big deal if you are into gaming. With the Mali and a faster A8 the Alpha 2 handles some newer game Surprisingly well, GTA 3 anyone? Now this will not take the place of a Tegra 2 1GB tablet, but within this price range it is a more than respectable showing.

Start with the full specs:

Screen

Type: 7" (diagonal) color LCD Display
Resolution: 800x480 WVGA
Touch type: Capacitive with 5-points of touch

CPU
1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A8

GPU
Mali-400MP

Memory
512MB RAM

Storage
4GB Internal microSD Card support (up to 32GB)

Wireless
Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n

I/O
mini USB OTG 2.0 port
micro SD card slot
3.5mm Earphone Jack
HDMI 1.4 out
.3MP front-facing camera

Power
Voltage: 100~240VAC, 50/60Hz
Battery: 3000mAh Rechargeable Li-Polymer

The case is a much sleeker and lighter design. Skytex took the issues people had with port placement and went with all the ports on the right hand side, Speaker, Microsd, Earphones, Mini USB OTG, HDMI out, Power, and Mic. They have placed the power button on the top right corner, and added hard buttons for volume up and down. The Back, Home, and Menu are on the front right face and are the soft sensor type button, ala Coby Kyros. This design has my one and only pet peeve. When holding the Alpha 2 in portrait mode with both hands the speaker is covered by my hand. Not a huge issue except in games. The speaker itself is very good for watching movies or gaming. They have given up Bluetooth in favor of HDMI out which in my opinion is the best trade they could have made. Bluetooth is a very nice feature, but the quality of the new HDMI out is great. Add a 32GB Class 4 or better and you have a killer little media player.

The capacitive touch screen is very responsive. With the factory protector on, which is about twice as thick as a normal screen protector, the pad suffered no response issues. I had read some "pre complaints" that it was "only 5 point touch". Seriously? Unless you are a direct descendant of Tom Thumb there is no way a 10 point touch could even be useful on a 7" inch pad.

As with many pads it does not come with Android Market installed. Now for anyone who thinks this is a bad thing, many tablets do not. And they don't to save you the consumer money. No licensing fees, no additional cost to us. That being said there is a misconception that not having it is the same as not being able to use it. Pretty much anything that says Android OS can run Market with a few minutes of your time. And your tablet does not have to be rooted.

The Alpha 2 comes with the alternative 1 Mobile Market. This is not Getjar, Slide-me or any of the other semi market places. 1 Mobile is a serious market contender with access to Netflix, Flash, Skype to name a couple. I have not yet not found the app I was looking for. But if you combine this with something like Amazon App Store you have all the bases covered. Personally I think whoever suggested hooking up with 1 Mobile was a genius.

Speaking of apps, like the original Alph, the Alpha 2 comes with a bare bones install. This is good for several reason, no bloat slowing the pad down, you control what you want/don't want. It comes with your basic media player, file browser, email app. One other nice little app is Recipes, a recipe search engine that actually works. You can type in what ingredients you have, or look for specific recipes.

Which brings me to my next "feature". While I cannot say it will...

Good value in a sub-$200 Android Tablet, February 2, 2012

Customer Video Review Length:: 4:31 Mins

I recently purchased this Skytex Skypad Alpha2 as sort of an experiment. I've got an iPhone but have always wanted to explore Android OS so I decided to take the plunge and get an Android tablet as well just to learn more about Android and have an alternative to Apple in my hands.

So far, I've been reasonably happy with this tablet. The construction of the tablet is solid. It does not feel like a toy at all. I've picked up some small tablets that just feel like plastic...not this one. It has an aluminum body.

The placement of the front-facing camera is odd since I usually expect a front-facing camera to be at the top of the device. But I also expect the home buttons to be at the bottom of the device, so I'm not quite sure what constitutes "top" or "left" on this tablet because the camera is at the bottom right of the screen if you have the tablet oriented so that the home button as at the bottom. In this case, the volume rocker and on/off button are on one side of the tablet while the adjacent edge of the tablet has the mono speaker, microSD slot, DC power in, USB, HDMI and headphone jack. The layout of ports, buttons and camera are not in optimal positions but they work where they are, it just seems a little odd and when holding the tablet I am always accidentally hitting the power button.

The tablet starts up briskly and the responsiveness of the screen was actually better than I was expecting. I have not yet noticed-with my limited use so far- any sluggishness whatsoever. Screen sliding is smooth and quick. I have watched several YouTube videos and they were glitch-free. Not the same experience with Netflix however. I experienced really bad pixelation and gradient issues with Netflix as well as some seriously bad sound syncing issues.

The tablet easily and quickly connected to my home network and surfing was very snappy. It seemed on par with my MacBook Pro quite honestly.

I've installed a handful of apps so far:YouTube, Kindle, eBay, Google+, Wired, Twitter and so far everything has gone smoothly. The touchscreen is responsive. Sometimes the screen doesn't reorient when I flip the orientation of the tablet, but that may be due to the fact that some apps don't change orientation and I'm not exactly sure how to figure out whether it should reorient all the time or not. Yet, sometimes when it is supposed to reorient, it does not.

The camera resolution is dismal but at least there is a camera. Don't expect much from it though as it's only 0.3 megapixels.

Obviously, with a tiny, mono speaker, sound quality is not spectacular nor very loud. I'd call the speaker barely adequate. Of course, headphones are going to give you a tremendously better listening experience.

The microphone quality was a big disappointment. Everything I recorded sounded kind of muffled and scratchy. This would not make a very good lecture recording device, for instance.

I do wish this had bluetooth, but I guess you can't expect everything at the price point. I do miss not having bluetooth built in though.

I can't say too much more at this point since I've not had the tablet very long. Buy my initial impressions are moderately positive and I eagerly await the release of the next version of Android which I will install on the Skypad as soon as I get it and will report back here with my impressions.

This seems to be a great value in a sub-$200 Android tablet worthy of your consideration.

UPDATE: I have a Kindle which as you may or may not know uses e-ink technology for its display which is a non-backlit technology. This tablet is backlit and therefore as an e-reader it is not nearly as comfortable on the eyes to read for very long periods. In fact, I find it very difficult to use as an e-reader and my eyes become fatigued very quickly. Unlike the Kindle, it's like staring into light and that does become tedious after a short while. I've used this for Skype numerous times and it seems to work pretty well both video calls and voice-only calls. Netfilx continues to give me poor performance which I can not attribute to network difficulties since my ROKU and other computers in the home stream Netflix flawlessly. With this tablet I get sound sync issues and poor video resolution. I have had no luck getting Flash installed on this using 1MobileMarket.

Skytab Alpha 2 - Very solid, February 2, 2012

By

Rock-a-rino - See all my reviews

By way of introduction, while I consider myself to be somewhat tech-savvy I am not really into techno-toys. I am not a gamer, don't do Facebook, etc. Therefore my needs are relatively simple. I want to get my corporate e-mail, read the news, get the weather, etc., and do it quickly and conveniently.

The Skypad Alpha 2 appeals to me for several reasons. First, it has the basic features I was looking for: Capacitive multi-touch 7" screen, Gingerbread, USB and HDMI ports, and an app marketplace. Secondly, the unit is upgradeable to ICS which is supposed to be available Feb 2012. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, it fit my $150 limit (actually $156 inc. shipping on the Great Big Online Auction site).

It pretty much does everything I hoped for especially after some customization. I loaded Touchdown to grab my e-mail. It is much nicer than the stock e-mail app. (Touchdown costs $20 after the 30-day trial). I am using Laucher Pro instead of the stock launcher and Dolphin HD for a browser. I replaced the stock keyboard with Steven Lin's free "Keyboard from Android 2.3". This is a bit nicer than the stock keyboard but more importantly (to me) the "word suggestion" feature wasn't working with the stock keyboard. Not sure if the dictionary wasn't loaded, but the replacement keyboard fixed that problem.

I did a simple test to measure battery life. I turned on WiFi and auto-sync. Turned the screen brightness up all the way and left it on indefinitely. Did some browsing, listened a bit to an audiobook but for the most part I just let the unit alone. The unit ran out of gas about 6 ? hours later.

I wish the screen had higher resolution (800x480) but then again I paid only $150.

Overall, I am pleased with the Skytab Alpha 2. I can't really compare it to other tablets, but can't imagine what they would give me over this tablet considering my needs.
