not meant for two players, November 17, 2012

My 2 daughters were so excited about this game as they loved the first princess wii game. As soon as they started playing, it quickly turned into frustration and anger as they realized the second player cannot customize her character at all, and has a limited role in what she can do in the game. She's basically just the boring sidekick to the first player. This does NOT work when you have twin daughters. I will probably be returning the game just to avoid the constant battles over who gets to be player one.

A Good Game For Every Little Princess who Loves the Disney Princesses., November 25, 2012

This review is from: Disney Princess: My FairyTale Adventure - Nintendo Wii (Video Game)

I bought this for my five-year-old twin nieces who are Dinsey Princess fanatics. They have never played any type of video game before (not even the Angry Birds app). Their parents don't own a Wii console, so I bought this game so they could play it whenever they're over at my place. Since I only have one controller, I managed to persuade them to take turns (even though they squabble).

With that being said, Disney Princess My fairyTale Adventure is a fun game for young girls. There are four kingdoms (Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Rapunzel). Truth be told, I am disappointed that there weren't a lot to do at Princess Tiana's kingdom, especially since my nieces love the Princess and the Frog. (You finish Tiana's level in less than 10 minutes.)

As an adult, I found this game to be redundant in its gameplay, but for a five-year-old, this game was absolutely charming. Even though this game was fairly easy in its gameplay (you are provided with a basic tutorial at the very start of the adventure), I had to provide some assistance. They had the most amount of trouble with the control stick on the nunchuk (steering). The C and Z buttons on the nunchuk aren't required in this game. So whenever I sense their mounting frustration, I took control of the nunchuk, while they manipulated the Wiimote. However, the more they play, the less they need me to take control of the nunchuk.

The good thing is that you cannot get lost, even if you didn't understand the instructions of the quests from the princesses and other familiar characters. You are provided with a bright shooting light that leads you to your next mission.

The gems (money) are scattered throughout the kingdoms and you can use them to buy accessories, outfits, hair dos, tiaras, flowers (for your garden), furniture (for your room) at the Wishing Well Store. My nieces enjoyed customizing their character's appearance, exploring the different fairytale kingdoms (the kingdom is linear in its story), transforming the imps into sprites. My neices didn't find the imps to be scary at all. In fact, they giggled while trying to chase them. However, there was a particular mission (involving Lucifer the cat from Cinderella's Kingdom), in which one of them got a bit scared and thrust the remote in my hand because she didn't want to play. Honestly, I didn't find it at all scary so I couldn't understand why she got scared. Other than that, the missions/scenes are very child-friendly. They audibly oohed and aahed at Cinderella's opulent ballroom, her exquisite gown, the Beast's castle, and Rapunzel's beautiful, braided hair. Their favorite mission was fixing the pieces to the puzzles. They managed to pick that up pretty quickly and no longer needed as much assistance.

The voice acting was fairly good. I grew up watching every Disney animated movie ever made and I believe Belle and Ariel's voices were similar to the original. However, I found Cinderella's voice to be dissimilar. I loved seeing all of my favorite characters such as Lumiere and Flounder to name a few (I'm a little princess at heart).

As I said, I found this game to be redundant and I wish it came with more varied missions. I wish it was an open world game (but I suppose children don't mind as much). Plus, once completed (for its price, the game isn't that long), it has no replay value. So my initial star rating was 3. However, since my nieces liked this game a lot, and enjoyed replaying the same adventure/missions, I gave it a 4 star.

This game would very much appeal to every little princess that is a Barbie/Disney Princess fan. Even though it's rated E, I think it's targeted for younger princesses between the ages of 4-8. Older princesses would probably find this game boring/unchallenging. I think this is a good game to introduce children to the world of gaming.

better & worse than the first game, December 27, 2012

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Disney Princess: My FairyTale Adventure - Nintendo Wii (Video Game)

This is the 2nd installment in the Disney Princess game series. We own both and the first game has been played more times than I want to remember.

The same as the first game:
Easy game play- I have seen kids as young as 4 figure out the game play. There is an easy path of gems to follow so you never get lost. The motions that you need to make to cast spells are very simple to make as well.
Design your character- The lead character can still change her look to suit the player.
Disney Princesses- still appear in the game and you can interact, on a limited basis, with them.
Long term attraction-Boring for adults or older children (bought for my 6 year old and it is holding her attention just fine, so far, but I wonder for how long?)
The music- exactly the same. I would have been okay with a change. VERY okay with it in fact.

New and better than the first game:
Customize: There are a few more things you can customize including "your room."
Gems: There is now actually something you can do with all the gems you collect. Much better than before when they were just "there" with no purpose but to guide your way. Gems can be used to purchase new customize items for your character (different dresses, etc.)
Princesses: Includes Rapunzel & Tiana

New and worse:
Customization of your character: for some reason the display seems more "hazy" and has less detail when the character is roaming around- like they are "Washed out."
2nd player: Cannot be customized!*

Biggest and most noteworthy:
*This is really only a 1 player game. As someone who has played the 1st game- the secondary character can do most of the actions in the game. In fact, when my daughter was younger, I did all the riddle and puzzle solving from the 2nd player except when we took turns- and then I sometimes had to take her controller and help. In the new game- there are many things you cannot do right from the start. For example: you are asked to pick up a watering can and water a plant- only the main character can pick up the watering can. The secondary character just roams behind and casts spells.

Good and bad? This game IS a little more complicated than the 1st game so it presents just a little more challenge. The secondary character doesn't have to DO anything most of the time. So, if like me, your daughter wants you to play and you'd rather sit next to her reading a book- the game will drag your character along behind the first character when you stop paying attention.

If, however, a 2nd person actually wants to play this game, they will be bored and frustrated beyond belief.

Overall:
A good by for girls who love all things disney and princess
Good for a child who finds other video games too complicated - loses interest or gets frustrated because they are too hard
NOT for a child who finds most video games easy to play, they WILL get bored.
NOT for two children to play together
Takes a couple hours to complete all game play.

As an aside, I pre-bought this based on the original description of the game. That description said you actually got to play AS A PRINCESS. I was very disappointed that this was not the case. However, as this was a Christmas gift and my daughter had no idea it was even out - she had no reason to be disappointed. I really wish they would come out with a better disney princess game. Until then, this is the best we've got.
